There are many motocrossers who also like to ride and race on the trails, just as there are many off-road racers who also frequent the motocross track. For these types, cross-country competition models, such as Yamaha’s YZ450FX are the perfect setup. Based closely on the Yamaha YZ450F open-class motocross bike, the YZ450FX adds trail capability to the aggressive race-ready performance of the big YZ. A six-speed gearbox, 18-inch rear wheel, skid plate, and kickstand are the standout features. The X factor also brings a larger fuel capacity, revised ECU settings for better off-road versatility, and unique suspension settings that are, for the most part, “softer” than its motocross sibling’s.
Like Yamaha’s entire YZ family of four-strokes, the FX features its signature reverse cylinder head design, where the exhaust exits the DOHC head at the rear, noticeable by the way the header pipe wraps around the top of the engine. This allows for a downdraft air intake system, the key to the YZ’s potent power delivery. Kayaba suspension, including the coveted KYB SSS (Speed-Sensitive System) fork, and Yamaha’s Power Tuner app are also key features of the YZ450FX, as well as the entire YZ four-stroke line.
The YZ450FX is the weapon of choice for the open-class racers of the AmPro Yamaha racing team with Ricky Russell and podium regular Liam Draper taking on both GNCC (Grand National Cross Country) Series and National Enduro championships. The YZ450FX is also popular out West in series such as WORCS (World Off Road Championship Series) and NGPC (National Grand Prix Championship) Series.
