Honda’s standard-model flagship motocrosser is the most heavily updated bike in the 450cc motocross segment in 2025 with an aluminum twin-spar frame constructed of 70 percent new components, several other chassis revisions, and suspension setting changes to match. The CRF450R’s engine didn’t receive as much attention, but still has notable differences from the 2023 and 2024 models with a longer header pipe, completely redesigned airbox and air filter, and updated ECU mapping.
Big Red’s fuel-injected liquid-cooled SOHC four-stroke 450cc single-cylinder mill didn’t need major attention because it’s already one of the best in class. This was addressed in our 2024 450 Motocross Shootout, where we stated the CRF450R’s engine is one of its best attributes. It’s still not the highest performer at peak in comparison to its competition, producing 51.1 hp and 32.9 lb.-ft. of torque on the Dirt Rider dyno, but the aforementioned refinements improve an already solid engine package.
“Even though Honda said the changes to the 2025 CRF450R power delivery are minimal, the feeling on track is significant,” test rider Allan Brown said. “It’s now much more controllable and easier to use efficiently, and I’m not constantly fighting to control the throttle while riding.”
