A New 2020 KTM 390 Adventure Joins The Austrian Lineup

A limited-production 790 Adventure R Rally is also coming in 2020.

KTM’s 390 Duke streetbike has a brawny cousin and his name is the 2020 KTM 390 Adventure. Beginner wanderlusters will be excited to take on the big outdoors with this small-displacement adventure motorcycle from the Austrian manufacturer.

Powered by a single-cylinder, four-stroke 373cc engine held by a trellis frame designed for straight-line stability and agile and precise steering, the claimed 348-pound 390 Adventure will take on off-road adventures, big or small.

Further, the engine is fuel injected with a 46mm throttle body. A three-way catalytic converter and balancer shaft, PASC slipper clutch, and ride-by-wire throttle are also featured.

The chassis is comprised of the trellis frame with a bolt-on trellis subframe that is said to be lightweight and compact but sturdy enough for extra cargo. A signature component to the KTM Adventure range is the die-cast, open-lattice swingarm, and you can bet that the baby Adventure gets this signature piece as well.

The 3.8-gallon fuel tank has a claimed range of 249 miles.

Enduro-derived, the WP Apex 43mm inverted fork features a spring in both legs, with compression damping fitted on the left fork leg and rebound on the right. A WP Apex shock with 6.9 inches (177mm) of travel can be fine-tuned with the adjustable spring preload and rebound damping.

The stainless steel header pipe and pre-muffler flow into a slim silencer to make up the 390 Adventure’s exhaust system.

Traveling down to the Continental TKC 70-wrapped wheels, you’ll find a 19-inch front and 17-inch rear wheel that will roll over street and off-road terrain. The Bybre brakes feature 320mm front and 230mm rear disc brakes that are paired with a four-piston radially mounted front caliper and two-piston floating rear caliper. Cornering ABS is included as well. Off-road ABS is also a function, and in this mode, ABS is deactivated on the rear wheel and ABS activation on the front wheel is reduced. Motorcycle Traction Control (MTC) is also a feature.

2020 KTM 790 Adventure R Rally

The 2020 KTM 790 Adventure R Rally will be produced in limited numbers, a total of 500 units worldwide. With the 790 Adventure R as the base and WP Pro suspension, this is claimed to be the “most off-road-capable Adventure bike in KTM’s lineup.”

While a new color scheme and graphics provide a nod to the KTM Factory Racing, the WP Xplor Pro 7548 fork uses Cone Valve technology to reduce harshness. The WP Xplor Pro 6746 shock does not use linkage, which reduces the overall weight of the rear suspension. Both of these suspension components allow for 10.6 inches (270mm) of travel, which is claimed to be 1.2 inches (30mm) more than the 790 Adventure R.

The Adventure R Rally is equipped with D.I.D Dirt Star spoked rims for the 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheel, and a 320mm front and 260mm rear disc brake help bring the machine to a stop.

Cornering ABS, Off-road ABS, and Motorcycle Traction Control are included, as are other rider aids like Street, Off-road, Rain, and Rally ride modes, KTM My Ride, and the Quickshifter+. You will also be able to give your throttle hand a break while riding by activating cruise control.

Further attributing to its rally intentions, the single-piece seat enhances off-road riding ergos when you go from standing to sitting. The wider-platform footpegs also add comfort when you stand up on the bike. The tapered aluminum handlebar can be adjusted into six positions to suit your riding style and ergonomic preference as well.

Powering the 790 Adventure R Rally is a 799cc parallel twin with electronic fuel injection.

Silencing the beast is an Akrapovič slip-on titanium exhaust. It is claimed to be 30–40 percent lighter than the standard silencer.

The 790 Adventure R Rally is listed at a price of $19,499.
