2018 Ducati Hypermotard 939 SP

Long before Toyota’s Prius arrived, the term “hybrid” described objects possessing positive traits from multiple sources. For instance, a mule is a hybrid. So is a grapefruit. And so, then, is Ducati’s Hypermotard 939. Morphing the approximate stature and agility of a big dirt bike, the versatility of a streetbike, and the performance of a superbike, the Hypermotard is designed to cut through urban traffic, dance along back roads, and attack apexes on the track.

A claimed 110 hp comes from a 937cc liquid-cooled Testastretta V-twin engine, which is married to ride-by-wire throttle control and rider aids including traction control, selectable riding modes, and Bosch ABS. The Hypermotard looks the business, and it is. The 34.2-inch seat height derives from the bike’s long-travel suspension; the 399-pound dry weight honors the designers’ commitment to low mass; and the large silencer juts skyward to increase cornering clearance at full lean. The Hypermotard 939 SP includes suspension, brake, and electronics upgrades, an 0.8-inch-higher seat, and an 8-pound weight reduction.
