Round 5 of the AMA Supercross series at the Oakland Alameda County Coliseum in Oakland, California, hosted one of the most action-packed races so far this year with Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing's Jason Anderson taking his second victory of the season. Anderson made his way through the pack after a sixth-place start and battled with Team Honda HRC's Ken Roczen in the closing laps of the race, eventually making the pass on the final lap.
“Today was a roller-coaster day,” Anderson said. “I went over the bars in the first practice, then was able to regroup and come out third in qualifying. I didn’t have the best heat race but came back in the main and had the battle of my life. It was great. The track was insane, but I’m happy to come out of it with a win."
Roczen led the majority of the race but made a small mistake in one of the many tricky rhythm sections in Oakland on the last lap, which allowed Anderson to get by. Roczen’s consistency throughout the first five rounds has him ranked second in the point standings, 15 points behind Anderson.
“It was a great race tonight,” Roczen said. “I was really bummed because we worked so hard just to pretty much give away the win on the last half of a lap. All in all though, we’re healthy and in the championship hunt so it was a good night. We’re moving forward and getting that much closer.”
Rocky Mountain ATV/MC-WPS-KTM’s Blake Baggett put in his best ride of the season, rounding out the podium in third while Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Marvin Musquin and Monster Energy/Knich/Yamaha’s Justin Barcia rounded out the top five, respectively.
