Chris Florin, the number four-ranked rider in the AMA/NATC National Observed Trials Championship last year, scored an upset win over seven-time and defending series champ Geoff Aaron at the 35th annual El Trial de Espana near Aguanga, California, on May 22-23. Aaron simply dug himself into a hole with a five in the very first section of the weekend, finishing the first day trailing Florin, 1-6.The four-time and defending El Trial champ, Aaron rebounded nicely with a one-point performance in Sunday's Exhibition sections, but Florin stayed close enough to retain his overall lead, and the Floridian ended up squeaking out a narrow victory, 6-7. Cody Webb, a 15-year-old high school student whose father, Kipp, was a Championship-class contender in the '80s, finished third.
