KTM's steel-framed motocross machines are some of the lightest on the track. In many cases, they are even lighter than the featherweight aluminum-framed Honda CRs and CRFs. As is true of the Japanese brands, part of KTM's Weight Watcher's program involved lightening up the rear-brake system with a smaller caliper and mount. In lightening the caliper mount, KTM opted to leave off the tabs to mount a shark fin to protect the rear disc. Fastway has come to the rescue, though. It machined this skeletonized billet-aluminum shark fin, then anodized it black. The fin itself is fairly rudimentary and not unique in any way, but the mounting is simple, strong and clever.
The $79.99 fin snuggles up close to the caliper mount, and three Allen-head bolts hold it in place. Two small bolts are in the front, with one tightly in front of the mount while the other inserts through the slot in the caliper mount. The third bolt—larger than the front two—goes through the rear of the slot in the caliper mount. All together the fin is mounted very cleanly and quickly and requires no modifications or force. Definitely a quality aftermarket unit that is a pleasure to install.
