Used 230cc Four-Stroke Trail Bikes To Buy in 2025

Recreational off-road motorcycles with 223–233cc four-stroke engines to purchase pre-owned.

There are three 230cc four-stroke trail bikes in production for the 2026 model year. When including used models, there’s one more, which saw its last year on the market in 2019. This quartet of 230cc four-stroke dirt bikes for recreational off-road motorcycling share quite a bit in common such as air-cooled SOHC four-stroke single-cylinder engines with two valves, six-speed transmissions, cable-actuated clutches, steel frames, conventional forks, spring preload-adjustable shocks, non-damping-adjustable suspension, full-size (21-inch front and 18-inch rear) wheels, and disc front brakes. If a secondhand 230cc four-stroke trail bike is of interest to you, this article shows the four that are available and may even help you decide which is right for you.

Yamaha TT-R230

Of the 230cc four-stroke trail bikes in production today, Yamaha’s TT-R230 is the only one that’s carbureted.Yamaha

Yamaha’s largest-displacement trail bike is the TT-R230. It has the highest compression ratio in the class at 9.5:1 and is the only one equipped with a Teikei Y26P carburetor. Front brake disc diameter is smallest of the four at 220mm, and this model from the Tuning Fork brand is the only 230cc four-stroke trail bike in production today with a drum rear brake too. Claimed seat height is lowest of the four machines in this list, albeit only 0.1 inch less than Kawasaki’s KLX230R S.

Kawasaki KLX230R

The only motorcycle manufacturer with a 230cc trail bike that’s fuel-injected is Kawasaki.Kawasaki

Kawasaki is the lone motorcycle manufacturer with two 230cc four-stroke trail bike models, the larger (in physical size) of which is the KLX230R. It was introduced in 2020. On our in-house rear-wheel dyno, the 49-state model makes 17.9 hp and 14.4 lb.-ft. of torque, and the 50-state version produces 17.1 hp and 13.7 lb.-ft. of torque. The KLX230R and its smaller sibling (the KLX230R S) are the only models in this category with disc brakes on both wheels—the front a 240mm and rear a 220mm.

The KLX230R S was added to Kawasaki’s trail bike lineup in 2021. In addition to having a 1.2-inch-lower seat height than the KLX230R according to Team Green’s specs, it also has the least ground clearance in class at 10.6 inches. The KLX230R and KLX230R S both have claimed wet weights of 262 pounds (49-state model) and 265 pounds (50-state model), which make them the heaviest of the 233cc four-stroke trail bikes you’ll find new or used. In 2024 and 2025, Kawasaki offered the KLX230R and KLX230R S in two colors—Lime Green and Battle Gray. For 2026, the optional hue was changed to Bright White (replacing Battle Gray).

Honda CRF230F

Honda’s CRF250F saw its final year on the market in 2019.Honda

The CRF230F was Honda’s flagship CRF-F trail bike from 2003–2018. This model’s last year on the market was 2019—the same that its successor, the CRF250F, was introduced. Like Yamaha’s TT-R230, the CRF230F is equipped with a carburetor and drum rear brake. And at a claimed wet weight of 248 pounds, the CRF230F is lightest of the 230cc four-stroke trail bikes you’ll find used.
