Kali Kavaca Chest Protector - Dirt Rider Magazine

I'm a big fan of under-the-jersey chest protectors, and this $149.99 Kali guard is my favorite to date. It fits close to my body, vents well and gives that great "secure but comfortable" feel. The unique features of this guard are the three-panel front section and four-panel back that pivot to ride closer to your torso. The center sections are plastic with sides of thick rubber, and all are substantial so the design earns my confidence. The one-size-fits-all hugs my medium-sized frame like it was made just for me. Though I've never had the problem, Kali says the inspiration for the flexible panels came from trying to design a chest plate that wouldn't catch the rider's forearms when going through the "rowing" motion on the bike. After many rides the Kali guard has never rubbed me wrong. The design does not irritate, dig or chafe-all while worn directly on the skin. It vents well and, aside from feeling heavy when I put it on, it is nothing but comfortable.I don't run the removable carbon fiber shoulder pads. They are fairly comfortable, but the real issue is looks. I'll admit it; I don't want to look like I'm wearing a chest protector. The Kavaca can be had in two colorways-white and gray or solid black. With the configuration I run, I'm getting zero shoulder protection, great roost deflection and tough-feeling chest and back pads. The one-size protector is pricey and cannot be bought without the shoulder pads. If money's no object, looking cool is key and staying comfortable is critical, this is your chest protector...and no one will know you're wearing it. -Pete Peterson
