In the ultra-competitive goggle market, Spy has released its newest goggle called the Foundation. The reasoning behind the name comes from the fact that Spy wants everyone to know it was founded in motorsports, hence the name, the Foundation. The new goggle was developed with input from the brand's top athletes and Spy feels the Foundation is a double down on its commitment to off-road motorsports.

In the goggle market, it seems like bigger is better. Spy’s new goggle is bigger with a claimed widest peripheral view on the market—a full 15-percent wider than the next leading competitor’s goggle. Spy paid close attention to create superior optics working to eliminate distortion at all angles, increase clarity, and provide the optimal viewing experience. To accomplish this, Spy is using high-quality, impact-resistant lens materials that are digitally mastered to exact specifications.

For this initial release of the Foundation, Spy is offering four colorways including classic orange with HD smoke chrome red Spectra lens, black with HD clear AFP lens, Revolution with HD clear AFP lens, and the special-edition Jeremy McGrath-signature goggle featuring HD bronze chrome with gold Spectra lens.

Additional items included in the box are a removable nose guard, a 10-pack of tear offs, and an extra HD clear AFP lens. A wide 45mm roll system is available for those who tend to get roosted in the mud, or you can purchase a laminate tear-off system as an accessory. The Spy laminate film comes in a stack of 10, while many of their competitors normally sell them in stacks of seven.

The fit of the Foundation goggle is medium/large. They are noticeably wider than most other goggles, but not excessively tall. The varying size of helmet eyeport openings can sometimes limit the size of goggles you can wear. I brought several helmets to the introduction held at McGrath's ranch to see how they fit. I picked a Shoei VFX-W helmet as its eyeport opening is on the smaller side and the best to start with.

I picked the classic orange with HD smoke with red Spectra lens. I would describe it as a Chrome HD gray/red-tinted lens. It was a sunny day and we would be riding a fun short track that weaved in and out of the shadows around several trees. There was no time needed to adjust to the lens, and I was able to put it on and my vision was great immediately. The lens color enhanced sharpness without darkening the shaded areas while riding. The triple-layer Isotron foam thickness was good. I would describe it as a medium firmness offering equal pressure around the entire frame. The moisture-wicking Dri-Force fleece did a good job of absorbing sweat in the warmer temperatures we rode in as well.

Spy worked hard on its Rise ventilation system that utilizes a venturi effect to draw air through subframe vents above the goggle and in between your helmet. The design creates a vacuum that pulls hot air from behind the lens. This system works well but can be challenging if you ride in dusty or silty conditions as fine dust can get through the ventilation foam and stick to the inside of the lens. My solution to this problem has been to rub some baby oil with a Q-tips all the way around the vent foam of my goggles, which makes the foam work in a similar fashion as the air filter does for your engine.

I've ridden for a few days now with the Spy Foundation goggle and I am very impressed. Its sizing is perfect if your helmets eyeport is on the smaller size. Unlike some of the larger-frame goggles, the Foundation never feels like it’s pushing down on your nose that requires a mid-moto helmet adjustment. The HD Chrome lens looks super cool from the outside and offers HD vision from the inside. With the four designs that are available, I am sure everyone can get a color combo that will work for them.
