RJ taking the outside line during the first timed practice. The track was extremely soft from the rain storm on thursday night. If you took the inside line on this turn you would get bogged down in the soft ruts. RJ turned a 2:09.055 on the 4th lap for his fast time in practice 1. In practice 2, RJ improved his time with a 2:07.692 on a faster and dryer track. This gave RJ the 12th gate pick for Moto 1.Photo by Rob Koy
RJ going down the hill after the uphill triple in the middle of the track. the breaking bumps got massive going down this hill. Riders would either try to soak up these bumps or try to jump several breaking bumps at a time to look for a smoother line. RJ later said that he kept his west coast settings for practice and decided to keep them for the first Moto. RJ got a good start in Moto 1 and ran in the top 5 until lap 5 when he said he got massive arm pump from a badly setup bike. He was able to to hold on to 6th place up to lap 12 when he and Aaron Plessinger tangled. RJ then had to settle for a 12th place finish.Photo by Rob Koy

For Moto 2 the team went ahead and made wholesale suspension changes for the soft and rutted track. RJ lined up 2 gates from the inside hoping for a good start next to Joey Savatgy.Photo by Rob Koy

RJ said the bike was much better in Moto 2 and would have finished in the top 10 if he did not get sketchy and run off the track and hit a flagger.
