Sometimes there are annoying little accidents that happen when you’re at the track that make you say, “Oh, well, I’ll be more careful next time.” One of these (whether you’re willing to admit it or not) is overfilling your gas tank, especially if the tank is black, which makes it very difficult to see the fuel level.

The people over at Moto Hose decided instead of being “more careful” next time, they were going to find a solution so that they never have to ride with gas on their pants again. The solution to the problem is very simple and straightforward: Put white, plastic balls inside the tank that float on top of the fuel so that when you’re filling the tank, you’ll see the balls rising to the top. I used these on Dirt Rider’s KTM 250 SX-F, which has a black tank, and just as advertised I was able to see the fuel level rise.

The only downside is that with the motorcycle not running the balls make an audible noise while swishing around in the tank that resembles ice in a cup. I tried using fewer balls in the tank just to see if the noise would be reduced; it was, but when fewer balls are in the tank it is harder to see the fuel level rise because some of the balls float along the edge of the tank instead of in the middle. After many fill-ups without a mess I will say that this inexpensive, simple product worked well and never interfered with the performance of the motorcycle, nor did it disrupt the function of the fuel pump.
