Ricky Charmichael, debuting his Makita Suzuki RM-Z450, won both motos of the Hangtown Classic, the opening round of the AMA Motocross Championships. The much-anticipated battle between RC and James Stewart didn't happen after Stewart crashed in the first moto and then DNF the second due to heat exhaustion. Second and third overall went to Chad Reed with a 3-3 and David Vuillemin with a 2-4, respectively.
Hepler took the victory in the first moto of the 125 class and Langston won the second moto, also taking the overall with a 2-1. The excitement of the day was in the second 125 moto when Mike Alessi had the lead and he and Langston tangled on the white flag lap. Langston got going again while Alessi struggled to get his KTM 250F started. He fell from first to 15th before he got going again, ending up a disappointing ninth overall. Second and third went to Mike Brown (3-2) and Suzuki's Broc Hepler with a 1-5 on the day.
