2012 Yamaha Revealed - Dirt Rider Magazine

2012 Yamaha PW50

With things the way we are, some would say we are lucky to get any new bikes at all. So the manufacturers are playing their hands very close to their chests. Yamaha is no exception. The big rumor was for an all new YZ 250F, a mini-mirror image of the revolutionary YZ 450F. But that is not the case, Yamaha went the path of further refinement, since the bike is not that far off from a very through redesign, especially on the chassis.Since the motor is the most proven (read:oldest) in the class, it has fallen off the pace just a little bit in throttle response compared to its FI competition and in top-end power. Throw in a larger 39mm carb, up from 37mm, let it breath with a more stretched out air filter cage, play with the CDI mapping and there is some claimed improvement lurking around. The muffler core is a bit smaller in diameter to meet the tightening noise regulations but Yamaha is on top of that game too. There were also some internal modifications to reduce vibration with an altered balance shaft and a lighter piston, plus a different balance to the crank. So don't call it old, call it dialed in.

No FI, but they say that carbs make more power, right? Well if you give it 39mm and tune it right there must be some more in there or they wouldn't have wasted the time.

The chassis did not go unnoticed because though the frame looks the same it is all new. The frame rails and the swingarm pivot sections get all new structures for increased rigidity in all directions so the bike is stiffer and less flexy. This is combined with a triple clamp that is puller in to 22mm of offset and is stiffer by clamping the forks with a wider spread. The fork tubes are stiffer and the suspension has been revalved to match, the KYB Speed Sensitive System fork is still on the bike. This tells us Yamaha is confident in the chassis shape and is stiffing it up and letting the suspension do more work.Thought the 250 got the lion's share of the changes the 450 did not go unnoticed. It leads off the list with some new ECU settings to smooth out the abruptness of the bottom end and let the motor sing a little harder for a little longer. The muffler gates a little longer and has a slightly smaller core to pass the 94 Db test and that will likely help with the power smoothing too. The suspension has a revised setting to let the bike ride a little lower in the rear, slowing the rebound of the rear and increasing the low and mid-speed compression damping on the fork. Internally there is a shifting fork modification to help the shifting.

This longer muffler and some ECU changes should tame the bottom power and let her sing on top.

The suspension will likely be the biggest change to the YZ450F. It is said to tame the stinkbug-like feeling and help the bike ride a little lower in the rear, since that was one of the more notable complaints from customers.

Both YZ get black rims and gold chains to bling the bikes out and both are available in either blue or white/red for 2012. So now that you know, don't get too antsy because these babies won't be in the showroom till the middle of September. In other just as important news is the re-release of the TT-R50 and the PW50 for the kids. This is because of the recent victory in the modification of the so-called Lead Law that was preventing the selling of kids bikes because children might eat them and become sick, though no reported cases were ever sited to prompt the banning of kids motorcycles. These bikes compliment a full line of TT-Rs in all sizes for the entire family if you are just getting started. And in that sense the bikes are all new to you, even though they have not changed much from the previous models. We are still awaiting news about the WR line and the two-stroke YZs, which will be released later, so what we know now is that they are not going anywhere, but will they change? Keep an eye glued to www.dirtrider.com for all that info.
