Moto XXX Motocross Round 4 Race Report: Budds Creek, MarylandAfter surviving the sand of Southwick, the AMA Motocross Championships headed due south to Mechanicsville, Maryland and Budds Creek Motocross Park. The temperatures this weekend easily exceeded the 90 degree mark, making it tough on the riders to not only stay hydrated but to put in two strong moto finishes.Saturday practice and qualifying started off on the right foot as Lites rider, Mitch Dougherty, went out and set the second fastest lap time in practice group one. Mitch's time would be good enough for 25th place overall and a spot on the start line in Sunday's motos. Motocross rider's Josh Summey and Kyle Lewis also rode well in the sessions earning 19th and 25th fastest times, respectively.Sunday morning once again started off well as Mitch posted another strong time and headed to the line 26th. Josh Summey would improve his time two seconds over Saturday's time and would line up in the 15th spot. Kyle Lewis would also improve his time over Saturday but would drop down one spot and take to the gate in the 26th position.Motocross Lites moto one did not get off to the best start as Mitch rounded turn one sitting in 36th place. Mitch focused on putting in consistent laps and started moving up. By the half way mark, Dougherty had moved up into 30th place and had another rider directly in front of him. As the moto came to a close, Mitch passed one more rider on his way to 29th at the moto's end.Motocross class moto one saw Kyle Lewis lining up toward the outside of the gate with Josh Summey further inside. As the gate fell, Lewis railed the outside of the first turn emerging in 21st while Summey stayed inside and netted himself a top 10 start. Unfortunately for Lewis, coming down one of the hills on lap four, he washed out and hit the ground. Even though the crash was fairly low speed, Lewis tweaked his knee and decided to pull off to get checked out. Results came back negative and Kyle headed to the truck to prepare for moto two. Summey, however, was putting in a very impressive ride battling with factory stars and holding down 11th place for the first part of the moto. On lap nine, two factory riders snuck by Summey relegating him to 13th. But Josh held tough and eventually crossed the line in 13th place. After the race, Summey said; "I got a good start, around 10th place, and I wanted to stay up front. A couple of guys got me toward the end of the moto but I was happy with how I rode."Motocross Lites moto two started off a little better with Dougherty heading down the second straight in 31st position. After battling with a few different riders, Mitch passed for 28th just before the half way mark. Over the next 15 minutes, Mitch would make a few more passes and work his way into 25th place. Overall for the weekend, Dougherty would end up being credited with 25th position.A little sore from his first moto crash, Kyle Lewis decided to try a different start technique for the second moto. Lewis once again lined up on the outside but this time darted to the inside as the pack headed into turn one. Everything was looking good for "Lucky" until another rider went down directly in front of Lewis causing him to go down. Summey again pulled a top 10 start and looked poised to improve his first moto finish. Lewis remounted in 40th position and began a charge. As Lewis was moving through the pack, bad luck would strike Summey as he was coming down one of the hills. "I was coming down the hill next to Jeff Alessi when he hit a bump and his bike swapped out. I had no where to go and ran right into his bike. Then, as I was going down my bike flipped over and hit me pretty good." Commented Summey after his crash. After being down for two laps, Josh would get going again only to pull off shortly after with bike damage. Still putting in hard laps, Lewis had worked his way up 27th by lap eight. As the heat began to take its toll on the riders, Lewis continued to push eventually crossing the line 23rd. Overall for the day, Lewis would finish 32nd while Summey would finish 19th.The series takes a week off before heading East to Buchanan, Michigan, home of Red Bud Track and Trail as well as round five of the AMA Motocross Championship. The historical Red Bud track always has an exciting pre July 4th celebration and this year should be one of the best.
