Dirt Bike News - Preview of First-Ever Supercross Race at Seattle's Qwest Field - Dirt Rider Magazine

First-Ever Supercross Race at Seattle's Qwest FieldIt took Yamaha's Chad Reed, of Dade City, Fla., 16 laps before he secured the lead en route to his fourth THQ World Supercross GP/THQ AMA Supercross Series race at the Silverdome in front of 51,142 fans. Reed called it one of the best races in his career as he rode a near-flawless race on the slippery, technical track of Pontiac's Silverdome. Much like past seasons, he has gained momentum late in the series and he could have a strong finish.Although Carmichael maintains a strong lead in the points standings, he is still more determined than ever to win. "I have some unfinished business," said Carmichael after Saturday's race, "These guys have stepped it up to give a last-minute surge. Now it's up to me to surge back. I don't want to just cruise around out there and protect the championship. I belong up front." Another strong contender for the remaining rounds is James "Bubba" Stewart. He has a taste for victory after leading all 20 laps of the main at Round 12 in Dallas. Now that the pressure is off, and he's proved he can win, Stewart is ready to give it his all. Anything can happen in four roundsThis weekend racing heads to Seattle's Qwest Field for the first time in history. The Seattle Supercross marks a return to the city, which supported doubleheader rounds of AMA Supercross during the 1980s at the Seattle Kingdome. The last race in Seattle was on January 30, 1999, when local favorite Larry Ward (Suzuki) won the main event in front of a near sell-out crowd of 60,193. Arguably one of the greatest 250cc main events in supercross history was at the Kingdome in 1996 where Jeremy McGrath edged out a hard charging Damon Huffman in a wheel-to-wheel battle that went start to finish."We're excited that the THQ AMA Supercross Series is returning to Seattle," said Kerry Graeber, AMA Pro Racing Vice President, Director of Communications. "The Pacific Northwest has some of the best motorcycle racing fans in the country and they have been faithful supporters of AMA Supercross races for nearly 30 years. Qwest Field is a great venue and we're confident that Supercross will be a great success there."Suzuki's Ricky Carmichael leads the THQ AMA Supercross Series point standings coming into Seattle. With just three rounds remaining Carmichael, who got off to his best start ever in AMA Supercross, looks well on his way to earning his fourth AMA Supercross championship despite going through a tough four-race stretch without a victory.Reed is looking forward to Seattle and is hoping for a little of the traditional Pacific Northwest weather to help his chances to catch the series leader. Admittedly, Reed needs a little luck if he hopes to catch Carmichael. "I want it to rain," Reed said of the open air Seattle race. "We saw in Anaheim earlier this year that one rain race can really turn things around and I need something like that to shake things up and give me a shot at catching Ricky. With just three races to go all I can do is continue to be consistent and get more race wins."After nearly a two-month break the AMA 125 West Series fires back to life in Seattle. Monster Energy Drink/Pro Circuit Kawasaki's Ivan Tedesco leads the series with two rounds remaining. Red Bull KTM's Nate Ramsey is second in the standings and is coming off a win in the most recent 125 West round in San Diego.Last weekend Kawasaki's Grant Langston won his first-ever 125cc Eastern Regional THQ AMA Supercross Series championship. This weekend his teammate Ivan Tedesco, who has a 36-point lead over KTM's Nathan Ramsey, can clinch the 125cc Western Regional THQ AMA Supercross Series championship.Tickets for the Seattle Supercross are available at Ticketmaster outlets, all participating Yamaha Dealers, at the Qwest Field Box Office, or charge by phone in Seattle: 206/628-0888 or in Tacoma: 253/627-8497. Gates open and practice begins at 12:30 pm, and the main event starts at 7:00 pm.This week's race will air the following day Sunday, April 17 on ESPN 2 at 10:00 p.m. EST.****Past Winners in Seattle 250cc Supercross
