Help Save Mammoth Motocross - News - Dirt Rider Magazine

Mammoth Mountain Motocross is a classic tradition, and one of our favorite events. Riders of all ages and skill levels come to race at an incredible track against the beautiful backdrop of the Inyo National Forest. The 37th Annual Mammoth MX just concluded last weekend, and like always, was an amazing week with some great racing. But unfortunately, this event is in danger of never returning. The Mammoth Motocross Racetrack's special use permit expired, and subsequently, the Forest Service is proposing restoration of the 18-acre racetrack area to a natural appearing condition—aka closing the track to all OHV use. The thought of losing one of our favorite motocross traditions is very upsetting. Lands are being closed every day and more restrictions are being placed on off-road vehicles. Our sport is growing and our lands are shrinking. We at Dirt Rider want to do everything we can to keep the track and this event, and hope you'll join us in our efforts. The Forest Service is also evaluating the alternative of allowing for continued use of the racetrack for motocross events, facilities improvements and full season operations and maintenance responsibilities. This would require an amendment of the Inyo National Forest Land and Resource Management Plan, and a waiver of national policy by the Chief of the Forest Service. We have an opportunity to comment on the Environmental Assessment and plans for Mammoth Racetrack. We need emails and letters of quality content to stop the closure of the track. Please do not send angry, hot-headed letters. Please take some time to review the Environmental Assessment at www.fs.fed.us/r5/inyo/projects/motoxEA.html and send a valid complaint to the closure of the Motocross Track.Letters may be addressed to:

The window to comment on the fate of the track ends July 26th. It would be extremely dissappointing to lose this event. Please join us in trying to save a great track and a classic event.
