Dalton Shirey Finally Wins A Big 6 GP

Check out our race report from Round 7 of the 2016 AMA Big 6 Grand Prix Racing Series in Gorman, California.

Zip-Ty Racing/Bonanza Plumbing Husqvarna’s Dalton Shirey is no stranger to winning in the AMA District 37/MSR Big 6 Grand Prix Series. After all, he’s won five Heavyweight Expert races so far this year.

But when it came to the 90-minute, $2000 AMA Big 6 West Coast Grand Prix (WCGP) Series feature races, fortune seemed to elude him. “I had a couple issues at the beginning of the year that kind of set me back, then I started concentrating on WORCS more than Big 6,” he said.

That changed at the 31st Annual California Grand Prix hosted by the Prospectors Motorcycle Club at Gorman, California, round seven of the series, as Shirey grabbed the lead before completing the first seven-mile lap and stretching it to the end for his first WCGP win of the year.

Maxxis/FMF/RPM Racing KTM’s Eric Yorba padded his series points lead by finishing second despite riding in pain from a big crash in the Unclassified race that morning followed by Rocky Mountain ATV-MC/Precision Concepts Kawasaki-mounted Justin Seeds.

Fasthouse Honda rider Blayne Thompson finished fourth in his first Big 6 aboard his new bike, thus losing more ground in points. Going into the eighth and final round next month, he trails Yorba, 163-135, unofficially.

Ox Motorsports Honda’s Justin Jones, WCGP Pro II winner Trevor Stewart, Ox Motorsports Honda’s Mark Samuels, Thousand Oaks Powersports Yamaha’s Michael Del Fante, Honda-mounted Travis Damon and WCGP Pro II riders Willy Simons, Jr., and Beau Baron, the class points leader, rounded out the top 11 overall.
