Shane McElrath won both motos to claim his first overall victory of the season at round 11 of the 2019 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship at Budds Creek Motocross Park in Mechanicsville, Maryland. The Troy Lee Designs/Red Bull/KTM rider moved into eighth place in the championship point standings with one round remaining on the schedule.   "It's been a true test to my fate this season," McElrath said. "The results haven't been what we wanted, but we never gave up and just kept at it and giving it our best. The conditions were brutal today and this feeling is crazy. It feels really good to get it done and walk away with the overall win today."

Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Adam Cianciarulo went 2-5 on the day at Budds Creek, which put him in second overall and enabled him to further extend his point lead to 30 over his nearest competitor. After 11 rounds of racing, he is the only rider in Pro Motocross to finish on the overall podium at every round this season.   “My mentality is just to do the best I can every moto,” Cianciarulo said. “It’s nice to have a little cushion heading into the final round, which definitely takes some pressure off. Ironman [Raceway] is a track that I feel like suits me well; and I just want to go in there and have the goal to go for another win.”

Monster Energy/Yamalube/Star/Yamaha Racing’s Justin Cooper rounded out the podium with his 6-2 moto scores. Cooper’s third place finish in Maryland marks the eighth time he’s landed on the overall podium this season.   “I got a much better start in the second moto,” Cooper said. “I changed the gate selection and got lucky since people were going down and I was able to sneak up the inside. It was hot out and I wanted to try and put a dent in the gap to first, but couldn’t. Overall a good day to be back on the podium. I’m not stoked on the day overall, but the second moto was much better.”

Monster Energy/Yamalube/Star/Yamaha Racing’s Dylan Ferrandis put his YZ250F in fourth place in both motos, which netted him fourth overall for the day. The Frenchman sits 30 points down from Cianciarulo in the championship standings with one round remaining.   “The bad start I had in moto 1 really affected me,” Ferrandis shared. “Then in the second moto, I was in the wrong place at the wrong time when I had two riders crash in front of me. It was not really the day I expected.”

Geico Honda’s RJ Hampshire rounded out the top five with his 3-8 race finishes. Hampshire is ranked fourth in the point standings after 11 rounds of racing.   “[My] riding was good all day,” Hampshire noted. “[I had a] bad start [in the] first moto, but made some good passes. I finally had a start that second moto and lost the front [end] coming into the first turn. Tough deal, but I can’t be too bummed; it’s the best I feel like I’ve ridden all year. One more [round] to go.”

Chase Sexton races at the 2019 Budds Creek National Motocross 250 Class Race.
Geico Honda’s Chase Sexton’s rebounded from a 12th place result in the first moto to finish sixth in moto 2 for seventh overall. “Yeah it was not a good day,” Sexton said. “I was riding good [and] qualified first [in practice]. I feel like I’m really good speed-wise, but when you get blown by on every start, it’s not a good feeling. I got ran into in the first moto. [In the] second moto, a guy fell into me and it just ruined the whole start for anyone behind him. It was a struggle today. I rode good, but can’t come from last. One thing I’m happy about is that it was hot today and I didn’t have any problems; I felt good. Next week [is] Indiana; I love that track, so hopefully I can end this on a high note.”Brown Dog Wilson

Alex Martin races at the 2019 Budds Creek National Motocross 250 Class Race.
JGRMX/Yoshimura/Suzuki Factory Racing’s Alex Martin crossed the line in 18th in the first moto after being taken out by another rider, but rebounded to finish third in moto 2. “I definitely had some highs and lows at Budds Creek,” Martin said. “I didn’t get the greatest start in the first moto and got caught up in some carnage on the first lap. Then on the eighth lap, another rider made a mistake and cleaned me out. I was only able to salvage a few points. The second moto was better all around. I had an awesome start and ran second the majority of the moto before getting passed with a few laps to go. It felt good to get up on the podium in at least one moto this weekend.”Brown Dog Wilson

I’m looking forward to the final round and I want to hit every lap strong and finish the season in a positive way.”Brown Dog Wilson
