Dual sport fun comes in all sizes, and Kawasaki’s KLX230 is a great size option for teens and small adults (with a driver’s license, of course) to get in on the fun. The KLX230 is the smallest in Kawasaki’s dual sport offerings, and it gets even smaller with the KLX230 S variant, which features an even lower seat height. The KLX230 stands at an accommodating seat height of 34.8 while the KLX230 S features an even more compact stance at 33.3 inches. The inch-and-a-half reduction is ideal for those who might be tippy-toeing on the standard model. A more confident reach to the ground is ideal for riders who are still learning and building skill.
Just like its off-road sibling, the KLX230R (which does not have a license plate), the KLX230 is powered by a 233cc four-stroke air-cooled single-cylinder engine with electric start and fuel injection. This is a very reliable and low-maintenance combination, great for beginners looking for something easy to ride and easy to own. In dual sport dress, with lights, mirrors, metal fuel tank, exhaust equipment, etc., the KLX230 carries 30-ish extra pounds compared to its trail-only counterpart, the KLX230R. Some might still define the KLX230 as a “lightweight” dual sport, but it depends on your frame of reference. Compared to a trail bike, the KLX230 is noticeably heavier. Compared to many other entry-level street-legal motorcycles, its near 300-pound curb weight might seem light. It’s all relative, right?
With full-size wheels (21-inch front and 18-inch rear), the KLX230 carries some of the same dimensions as a full-size bike. Long-travel suspension (7.9 inches up front and 8.8 inches rear) means it is capable of soaking up some bigger trail obstacles, though its plush setup will be better suited for lighter weight riders. Heavier riders will quickly find the limit of the suspension travel whereas smaller riders will enjoy the comfortable ride.
