The life of a Dirt Rider test rider is not as glamorous as you may think. Sure, there are the photo shoots, the brand new bikes with fresh knobbies and the highly classified shootout opinions, but those are only the tip of the iceberg. When you get down to it, the bulk of a test rider’s duties involve lap after lap after lap after lap on the track. A tester’s work is never done, and there is always something else to decipher, tweak, modify, tune or change on a bike. Of course, there’s also the grueling long haul test crucible that a chosen handful of our test bikes are going through. Visit www.dirtrider.com for updates on these machines, or just head out to your local Southern California motocross track. More than likely, one of our test riders will be out there pounding even more glamour into a lucky long haul bike.

Rider: Jesse Ziegler
While you’ve certainly heard of this specialized winter pastime, you may not be aware that the snow bike movement is experiencing massive growth in both rider participation and performance advancements. Having never given this segment the attention it deserves, we decided to jump headfirst into the powder and compile the world’s first official snow bike comparison. After slamming through the white stuff and learning each system inside and out, we came away with a spot-on comparison and some amazing photos. Check our April 2012 issue for more on the elusive snowbikes.

Rider: Kevin Windham
A crowd pleaser through and through, veteran MX hero Kevin Windham will go to great lengths for his fans. Most of the time it all goes as planned, but sometimes K-Dub ends up taking a spill during opening ceremonies while attempting a tricky Canadian jump transfer with two spotlights blinding him and 50,000 fan screaming his name. Still, the unflappable racer laughs it off and takes a bow, proving yet again why he is so deserving of such a long autograph line. Oh, and did we mention that he’s one of the fastest racers on the planet?

Location: Erzberg Red Bull Hare Scramble, Eisenerz, Austria
Rider: Cyril Despres
Erzberg—the name says it all. Arguably the most arduous single-day race in the world, the Red Bull Hare Scramble portion of this legendary event draws thousands of racers from across the globe to see if they have what it takes to make it through. Many try, yet few succeed in even finishing the race, and even the best off-road riders on the planet are pushed to their very limits of talent, skill and stamina. Here we see rally superstar and multi-time hard enduro finisher Cyril Despres inching his way up the “Iron Giant” in 2011. For as much trouble as it appears that Despres is having, he’s actually making it look easy!
Location: Thunder Valley, Lakewood, CO
Rider: Marvin Musquin
Built on the side of a steep hill at nearly 6,000 feet above sea level, the Thunder Valley motocross track was the perfect setting for this year’s Motocross of Nations. With a long start, epic dirt, deep ruts and power-robbing hills, the various obstacles around the track were formidable, yet nothing compared to the massive jumps that peppered the course. The mother of all hits was this enormous quadruple step-up that was only successfully attempted by a handful of the world’s best racers. To give you some perspective of just how much airtime the jump provided, check out French racer Marvin Musquin’s amplitude. Funny thing is, he’s only tripling the huge quad!
