THQ Supercross Jumps into San FranciscoAURORA, Ill. (January 20, 2002) – THQ World Supercross GP and the AMA Supercross Series make their inaugural stop in San Francisco’s Pac Bell Park, Saturday, January 25. A Press conference will be held on Thursday, January 23, from Noon-2:00 p.m. where riders will be available for interviews and ride the man-made dirt battleground.Team Honda’s Ricky Carmichael, the two-time defending supercross champion, won his first 250cc main event of the season last weekend in Anaheim, marking his third-career victory at Edison International Field. Carmichael’s win, the 27th of his career, pushed him into the AMA Supercross Series points lead over Yamaha’s Chad Reed. After two rough races, Carmichael, who failed to lead a lap before Anaheim 2, is on top of his game.”I had two bad races and made some mistakes,” said Carmichael. “Now I am back to where I was. It’s funny how you can have some bad races and everyone thinks you should retire. I worked hard all week to get this win.”In the past two seasons, Carmichael has won the fourth stateside race of the series. During his ’01 campaign this weekend kicked off a 13-race win streak.Reed, the only rider to win two races this season, holds down the THQ World Supercross GP points lead over teammate David Vuillemin, who scored a win in Geneva, Switzerland.In 125cc Western Regional Supercross action, Kawasaki’s James Stewart carries a two-race win streak into Pacific Bell Park. Stewart, the first African-American to win a supercross race, leads 2002 champion Travis Preston by 10 points. Boasting six 125cc supercross wins in his two years of competition, Stewart has led 30 of the 45 laps this season. Last year, he led 43 laps the entire season.Supercross is the fastest growing motor sport in the world and is the reigning king of extreme sports.
