Coming into the pro motocross ranks touted as the “next big thing” isn’t a guarantee of success. There have been dozens of such riders who never really achieved anything major in the sport. So although many people considered Davi Millsaps to be the “next big thing,” his eventual success was never a certainty.Perhaps this is part of why he was admittedly so nervous in the rounds leading up to the Lites Eastern Regional Supercross finale despite his rather massive points lead.
Coming into the final round, his only mathematical challenger was Josh Grant, who had matched Millsaps’ 3 wins on the season, but due to a crash at round one, Grant was 22 points behind Millsaps, which meant that Millsaps need only finish 17th or better in the main to clinch the title.None of that ended up mattering, though, as Grant tangled with another rider on the opening lap and went down, somehow punching a hole in his engine in the process, which resulted in a major oil leak and a bike that wouldn’t start. Grant’s night was over.Millsaps took his time going around holeshot artist Chad Ward, and then fended off Grant’s teammate Tommy Hahn for 15 laps to take his fourth victory of the season and clinch his first professional title at just 18 years of age.Chris Gosselaar scored yet another podium finish, and with Grant’s DNF, Gosselaar grabbed second in the series. After the drama in the Lites class, the big boys hit the track for a largely processional affair, as Michael Byrne grabbed the holeshot, but quickly gave way to his Kawasaki teammate James Stewart, who led every lap of the main event while Ricky Carmichael quickly moved into second and stayed there.Byrne also lost spots to Chad Reed (third, on lap 4) and Kevin Windham (fourth, on lap 7) before settling for fifth behind Stewart, Carmichael, Reed and Windham.Lites Main:
