Suzuki’s Ricky Carmichael, of Havana, Fla., won the opening night’s moto of AMA Supercross at the U.S. Open inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Yamaha’s Brett Metcalfe, of Murrieta, Calif., scored his first-ever moto win in the AMA Supercross Lites at The U.S. Open.Carmichael, who won the U.S. Open in 2000 and 2001, moved out front on lap one of the 25-lap final finale, trailed by Kawasaki’s Michael Byrne, of Temecula, Calif., and Honda’s Ernesto Fonseca, of Murrieta, Calif., in third. The 13-time AMA National championship winner earned the win, while Byrne finished second and Fonseca third.”This was a big win tonight,” said Carmichael. “We do what we can do, and this is why we work so hard. I didn’t prepare for this race as much as I would have liked. This week I was sick, and now I am trying to do my best considering the situation.”After winning the Holeshot in the AMA Supercross Lites main event Honda’s Andrew Short, of Colorado Springs, Colo., led the first half of the race, but did not finish due to a mechanical failure. Metcalf capitalized on the situation and moved into the lead and held on for the win. KTM’s Josh Hansen, of Elbert, Colo., finished second and Honda’s Billy Laninovich, of Lake Elsinore, Calif., finished third. “This was the debut for my new bike and it was a success,” said Metcalf. “I want to thank my Dad for always being there for me and he’s here tonight, so it’s extra special.”"I have been off the bike for a while, and this was my first race back, so I was a little out of control,” said Hansen. “I look forward to tomorrow night’s race.”In the 85cc class Suzuki’s Eli Tomac, of Cortez, Colo., won the opening moto and finished fourth in the second moto. Honda-backed Shawn Rife Jr., led every lap of the second moto. The overall champion will be crowned tomorrow night after the final two motos. The final night of racing takes place tomorrow.
