National Hare & Hound Round 3 – Roadrunners Offroad Racing 3/6/2011 – By Shayla Fulfer
The Round 3 of the AMA/Kenda National Hare and Hound series was in El Centro, California. It was going to be a long drive from Idaho so we decided to fly down instead. I got to the race site and the temperature was supposed to be about 85 degrees for the day, which is really hot for me because its about 40 degrees in Boise, Idaho!
I practiced the bomb a few times and found me a place on the line Sunday morning. I had been sick the whole week before the race and during the race so my body was very weak. The race began and I got a horrible start because my bike didn’t start at first. The whole first loop was very fast paced and dusty and was about 60 miles long.
I got lost with about 5 other racers and we finally found the course again. At around mile 40 I caught up to Sarah Kritsch and passed her and a bunch of other racers. Between there and the pits, I crashed twice pretty hard but got right back up and Sarah still hadn’t caught up to me. I came into the pits and tried to make a quick pit stop and as I was leaving, I saw Sarah pulling into the pits. So I took off for loop two which was about 40 miles long and consisted of sand dunes and rocks. I was doing good until I got to a rock canyon and that took a lot out of me and that is when I ran out of water. I was still in the lead and then I got stuck on this sand hill because I didn’t get enough momentum and that is where Sarah passed me. I kept going and passed Sarah again going into a canyon where her bike blew up and also where I met up with Chilly White. He filled up my water pack and helped me out a lot! I finally got on my way to the finish and was so wore out and tired. I finally got my 1st place finish for the 2011 season and I hope there are more wins to come!
Blais Racing Services rider Kevin DeJongh finishes 6th in class and 37th Overall after some water pump seal problems and repeat overheating on the 2nd loop. “It was a dissapointing day with the small bike issues but I was very happy to be able to nurse the bike in to get my finish. The first time I stopped to let the bike cool down I decided to empty out my camel pak water into the radiator. I finally made it to the next check and I was able to fill my radiators back up with bottled water. It is a long season and this is only the 3rd race in. The Idaho National is next weekend and I will be ready to go.”
