The Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki team of Adam Cianciarulo, Arnaud Tonus, Austin Forkner and 250 series points leader Joey Savatgy lined up behind the gate at the RedBud National prepared to stake claim in the winner’s circle. Race day started off with Cianciarulo earning fastest qualifier for a second consecutive weekend. At the gate drop for Moto 1 it was the rookie Forkner earning the first holeshot of his career, with Savatgy in sixth, Cianciarulo in eighth and Tonus in 21st. Forkner would swap the lead a few times on Lap-1 while Savatgy pushed his way into third position. Five minutes into the moto Savatgy made the pass on Forkner for second place, while Cianciarulo sat eighth and Tonus 15th. At the halfway mark Savatgy remained engaged in a battle for the lead with Forkner third, Cianciarulo eighth and Tonus 13th. With just over seven minutes remaining Savatgy closed the gap to the lead to just over one second, while Forkner was pushed wide and relegated to fifth, Cianciarulo sat ninth with Tonus moving his way up to 11th. The last lap of the moto became an all-out battle for the lead but at the checkers it would be Savatgy second, Forkner and Cianciarulo sixth and seventh respectively and Tonus would bring it home in 11th.
