Better Safe Than Smokey! - Dirt Rider Magazine

I have a burning question regarding installing new clutch plates into my bike. Come replacement time, I have always soaked mine in oil prior to installing them into the basket. However, the other day a friend at the track installed his directly out of the package and into his bike without first applying any oil on them. He stated that it is not necessary to soak them? Is he right?**Christian Chenier

You were being safe, he was getting the job done. The plates will get oil on them pretty quickly, especially of it is a four-stroke and the oil is pumped into the center of the clutch. I do it both ways depending on how much of a hack I feel like at the moment. -Jimmy Lewis
