2011 Yamaha Models Announced - Dirt Rider Magazine

The big news out of Yamaha for 2011 is the addition of an Adventure model coming to the United States that looks ready to compete with the KTM 990 Adventure and BMW GS models for long-rang fun-seekers. Dubbed the Super Tenere, the go-anywhere-anytime machine is powered a 1200cc twin with a 270 degree crank, which has the pistons firing nearly at the same time to give a big-traction feeling almost like a giant single. The bike has two engine modes, three traction control modes, and ABS and UBS (Unified Braking System). The six speed feeds power through a shaft drive to the rear wheel, the rear shock has a hydraulic shock preload quick adjuster, the seat offers 25mm of height adjustment, and a six gallon tank can to take you WAY past the corner market you headed out for. This ticket to fun won't be ready to hit the highways and backroads until May 2011, so you have all winter to plan your springtime outings.For 2011 the YZ line-up will have minimal changes, but even that can be seen as exciting news to some. Yamaha's motocross flagship, the YZ450, is the only model with actual changes, and those consist only of a new clutch push rod lever to improve clutch consistency over long motos, and a slightly larger gas tank to make it through those long rides. (from 6.0 to 6.2 liters).But the absence of change should been seen as a good thing in one area, and its also one more year media rep Tim Olson will not have to eat his hat, as promised, if the two-strokes ever disappear. Yep, Yamaha is still selling its three smokers, the YZ250, YZ125 and YZ85. No changes to these machines, but with the state of the economy it's great news for people looking to get onto the fun, simple two-strokes.The same "good" news for off-roaders is that the WR250F and WR450F will return as 2011 models.   • The valve spring retainers are lightweight aluminum instead of steel, and valve spring pressure is lighter for reduced valveopening force. This contributes to superior low-to-midrange torque characteristics due to less power-robbing friction.There's also a higher lift cam profile, while valve stem ends are chromium-nitride coated for exceptional reliability and reduced maintenance.

  • The exhaust port is "D" shaped instead of round. This increases velocity through the port for excellent throttle response, while enhancing the power feeling of the engine.

  • The radiator is lower and further back and the oil tank is compact and repositioned to achieve greater mass centralization.

  • The carburetor bore has a venturi shape, plus there's recalibrated jetting and a accelerator pump. This translates to impressive response when the rider snaps open the throttle, and contributes to superb torquey low-to-midrange power characteristics.

  • The intake boot offers a straight, smooth tract for excellent engine breathing and more power. The airbox is shaped to tuck neatly into the Bilateral Beam frame.

  • The exhaust pipe has been carefully tuned to optimize engine power, with a muffler that's 50mm longer and with a narrower core - a design that lets the YZ250F comfortably meet the latest noise standards without sacrificing power.

  • Engineers were able to increase the clutch spring load for stronger engagement, yet, thanks to a recalibrated clutch actuation arm cam ratio, lever pull is actually lighter than before.

  • Third and fourth gear ratios are slightly taller, and third, fourth, and fifth gears are stronger than ever with drive dog shapes for positive engagement. That gives riders a strong gearbox that's been carefully matched to engine power characteristics.

Chassis/Suspension:

  • The Bilateral Beam frame is crafted from a carefully chosen combination of forged and extruded aluminum pieces - 20 in all - all welded together to provide unmatched rigidity balance.

  • The KYB® speed-sensitive front fork delivers exceptional damping feel, responsiveness, and bump absorption characteristics. The piston rods have a new surface treatment, and the oil seal is a new design.

  • The 4-way-adjustable KYB® rear shock has been designed to make the most of the Bilateral Beam frame design. It's lower in the frame for excellent mass centralization.

  • The tank, seat, and rear fender are flat and the relationship between handlebars, pegs, and seat result in a natural, more forward riding position that facilitates rider movement. The fuel tank has been moved toward the center of the bike for mass centralization. The ProTaper® bars are four-way adjustable, and handlebar mounts and footpegs are 5mm higher to optimize rider position on the chassis.

The 44mm Keihin® throttle body is designed for easy starting, with an integrated cold start and idle speed adjustment knob.   • 14 volt / 110W high output generator powers the battery less fuel injection system.

  • 4-titanium valve cylinder head with a "pent-roof" design combustion chamber provides excellent combustion efficiency and unequalled power output.

  • Intake and exhaust camshaft profile changes to increase valve working angle and valve lift for most excellent performance at all rpm.

  • The bigger 97.0mm bore and shorter 60.8mm stroke, along with a higher 12.5:1 compression ratio, create a combustion chamber that delivers really impressive power.

  • The air filter case is changed to accommodate the new engine layout. Putting it up front keeps dirt and dust kicked up from the rear tire away from the intake system.

  • "Tornado-style" exhaust header with resonator efficiently scavenges exhaust gasses and helps the engine achieve its exceptional low-to-mid range torque characteristics, while the 150mm-longer muffler comfortably meets the latest noise standards without a sacrifice of power.

  • Clutch and transmission components have been designed to give the rider great shifting feel.

Chassis/Suspension:

  • The aluminum Bilateral Beam frame is crafted from a carefully chosen combination of forged and extruded aluminum, 16 components in all, for the right rigidity balance and light weight. A very symmetrical chassis design promotes nimble handling, letting riders enter and exit corners as quickly as possible to put the competition behind them.

  • Skid plate is constructed from tough polypropylene for great protection and low weight.

  • The swingarm and rear shock are redesigned, with the shock mounted along the central axis of the frame, taking advantage of the space no longer needed for the front-mounted airbox. This optimized combination delivers exceptionally linear performance for excellent bump absorption and awesome cornering ability.

  • The KYB® Speed Sensitive front fork has excellent feel and shock absorption.

  • KYB® rear shock with large capacity piggy back reservoir and 50mm piston for more consistent damping control.

  • Fuel tank is positioned underneath the seat, contributing to the centralized mass. The seat is long and flat for to allow free rider movement.

  • Rear sprocket shape has a trick appearance and is light weight.

  • The triple clamps are designed, with a change in offset from 25 to 22 mm for unequalled cornering performance. The ProTaper® bars are four-way adjustable to accommodate a wide range of riders.

  • The front and rear fenders, along with the number plate, side cover and front fork protector have been designed for an aggressive look. A minimalistic design is used to accentuate the handling character of the bike. Less plastic is used to expose and enhance the lightweight aluminum frame.
