The hunt was on for Kailub Russell

The skies were dark and ominous as rain threatened to turn a dry and sandy Camp Coker into a royal mess however the weather held off long enough to allow one more hunt for a new winner at round 5 of the Amsoil Grand National Cross Country Series "Bullet" GNCC. Kailub Russell did not earn his many championships by laying down when the competition gets rough, in fact he excels at turning others dreams into nightmares and this season is of no exception. Thad Duvall and Steward Baylor want nothing more than to put the champ off his game and knock him down several positions from his current run of wins.

The XC1 Pro start once again saw Josh Strang rip his way to the holeshot as he led the field of racers into the sandy South Carolina woods. It wasn’t long before a very eager and hard charging Thad Duvall took the lead and appeared to be setting a blistering pace that showed little sign of slowing as the first few laps were scored. Behind Duvall it was Russell on the move as he settled in behind the leader and kept him in check. The ability for Russell to overcome a mudpack or bad start and streak to the front is just another sign that he is the rider to beat and this round was nothing new for the returning champ. Duvall and Russell continued their race with zero signs of either finding an edge to change the running order. This was the race Duvall had been waiting for, it was fast, it was tough and he was mentally ready to take his first win of the season. For Russell it was just another day on the job as he appeared smooth and fully capable of making this a fight no matter who happened to be running in front of him.

Pit strategy played a huge role in the outcome of this race when Duvall and Russell came racing into the scoring area bar to bar with Russell pitting while Duvall pressed on. Only miles from the finish, reports came in that Duvall was either having mechanical issues or he was running out of fuel! Russell took over the lead and rolled in for the win while Duvall was struggling to get gas and find his way to the finish which he did giving him an unofficial second. Some delay after the finish surrounded the official results as an issue with Duvall getting the needed fuel may have been in violation of the rules which at the time of this report, keep the final results unofficial.

And once again, the rider that has been leaving it all on the track was none other than Stewart Baylor. With another dismal start, Baylor had his work cut out for him as he carved his way through the XC1 class in a valiant effort to reach the podium where he has been a regular visitor this season, Hearing him scream and rev his KTM to move people was virtually getting him to the front as he worked his way to another podium finish as he secured another third. If he could get a start, he has what it takes to battle for the win and he is very eager to make that happen.

The series will head to the midwest as a brand new location will be where it all goes down in Peru Indiana for the X Factor GNCC on May 6 and 7.
