It doesn’t get bigger than this: 280mm of brute stopping force in a complete brake kit guaranteed to bolt on to any 2002-’09 CRF250 or 450 R or X. My long-haul ’09 CRF250R had a mush-tastic front brake. I was blaming the flex in the plastic brake line and was going to just bolt on a stainless steel unit to see if that was an easy fix. Then, this kit showed up.The CRFstuff.com package comes in two versions. The Base Kit sells for $228 and includes the oversize stainless rotor, lightweight aluminum caliper relocation bracket, Carbone Lorraine pads and a one-year warranty. It’s designed to be a simple bolt-on sort of deal. We tested the $288 Pro Kit. It includes all of the above plus a trick stainless steel brake line and a serving of Motorex 5.1 fluid.Installation was easy (even swapping the line proved to be simple thanks to the swiveling banjo fittings). Once bolted up, the kit is showroom clean except for the absence of the stock plastic rotor guard (that can’t contain 280mm of stoppage). The performance can be described as really, really strong. If you’re a brake masher, you might want to look at a smaller unit because this will bite you if you’re not good at modulating the lever. The immense leverage of the rotor slows the bike down immediately, and the zero-fade at the lever tells me the stainless steel line is doing its job. I’ve had it on the bike for about 10 hours of hard moto use, and the pads are holding up well. The only confidence killer with a system like this is the potential for damage to the rotor since it hangs out there more. I wouldn’t take it off-road.Overall, this kit is a winner on the track. It performs exceptionally well for those looking for works bike-level front brake feel and performance. -Jesse Ziegler
