We just completed our first full day of testing on the big orange ride and here is your dirtrider.com web impression.

First out of the gate you need to notice how cool KTM graphics are this year. They're black and bad-ace with little details like freestyle ramps, a guy holding a pit board and supercross rhythm sections illustrated throughout. Super cool. And the bike is still starts with the push of a button.

Who cares about graphics, really though? We'll get down to what really matters.

The front end of the KTM 450 features abundant changes. The outer fork tube is from a new vendor and besides being a factory fork-like color they boast reduced wall thickness to aid in flex and feel in the front. Also, the fork spring has dropped down a rate and a new bottoming cone and internal settings have been adjusted to dial in the ride.

After our first few hours on the bike, it's clear to see these changes to the fork (and to the shock) are improving the KTM's ride.

The PDS shock receives a beefy 14mm needle instead of the 11.5mm unit and all coinciding components have been changed to match. The shock spring rate stays the same as last year.

We noted these changes bringing big improvements to the KTM feel in our KTM 250 XC web impression. Essentially, KTM has eliminated the excessive feedback to the riders' hands that last year's bikes delivered. No more jarring in the palms, the new front end seems to soak things up much better and the bottoming resistance is holding it's own. We're still dialing it in since we feel the overall character is a bit soft for faster paced riders and have found the bike takes adjustments well. Plus, it's offering us a lot of options through the clickers, as the range of adjustment is wide. In general, we're going stiffer to eliminate some wallow we're experiencing at stock settings when we approach fast race pace. We'll have all the settings in our first test, which will go live on dirtrider.com next week.

There are more ride improvements on this bike (like reduced rigidity in the headstay) that seem to be aiding the ride as well.

We're initially very happy with the handling and suspension of the KTM 450 after our first day.

The power on this bike has been updated as well. There is something going on inside the cylinder head (we'll spoil the surprise in our first test), along with a new intake tract and exhaust flange that is increasing the connectivity of your right wrist and the rear wheel.

Where last year's bike felt loose on the bottom and tighter on top, this new bike delivers a direct link to the rear wheel throughout the power range. It's not yet as free-revving on top as our '08 when tested back-to-back, but in our experience these motors will rev up as they break in for a few hours. Both motors felt as controllable in their delivery as you can expect from a 450 with the '09 seemingly searching for more power quicker.

What was noticeable right away when comparing these bikes ('08 and '09) was the weight feel in the front end. The fork changes, engine headstay modifications and other small details like it's all-new front brake caliper and mounting assembly seem to have taken the weight off the front end of the bike and moved it to a happy, invisible place.

This loss-of-weight and increase in response is likely a combination of all these changes KTM made; including engine, shock and controls (all new skinnier levers mount to a new-bend handlebar).

We're heading out now to test this beast at a couple of different tracks. "We are very proud of him and look forward to watching him excel at the remaining four races this year."

Riding for Team Suzuki City, Cooper finished 5-2, which was good enough for third overall.

Pirelli Tire's Antonio Balbi also turned in an outstanding performance, finishing a season-best fourth overall in the second moto. His 8-4 results gave him a fifth place overall as the circuit heads to Washougal Motocross park next weekend.

Rounding out the weekend for the Pirelli-backed riders were Justin Sipes (17-13, 14th overall) and Jake Marsack (39-11, 16th overall).

Pirelli Tire North America specializes in manufacturing and marketing high-performance tires for passenger vehicles, motorcycles, ATV's and motorsports. Although he was happy to finish on the podium again, he would end up 10th overall for the day due to a mechanical failure during the first moto.

His teammate Matt Goerke also had a great day. Goerke started in 7th position in the first moto but quickly moved his way into 3rd. He held on to 3rd until he slid out after the halfway point and recovered in enough time to take 7th. In moto two, Goerke found himself out front again, but after losing his goggles a few laps into the race he began to fade as his vision became blurry. He finished the second moto in 9th. His two top ten finishes earned him 6th overall.

The final two MDK KTM Lites riders, Ryan Sipes and Justin Brayton, struggled with starts in the first moto and both had to work their way up through the bottom twenty to finish 13th and 17th respectively. In moto two, Sipes started near the front while Brayton came around in 11th. Sipes stayed consistent and finished 6th earning 9th overall. Brayton had to pull off to get new goggles which set him back to 22nd. He eventually caught up to 15th passing Mike Brown on the last corner of the last lap. His 17-15 scores earned him 17th overall.

MDK KTM Factory Motocross rider Nick Wey had a mid-pack start first moto and moved his way into 10th overall. In the second moto, he lost his goggles after the second lap and struggled to hold on to 12th. His 10-12 scores earned him 10th overall. Defending Champion Ramon completed the podium right ahead of series leader David Philippaerts. In the MX2 class Tommy Searle came back to victory from local star Tyla Rattray and Nicolas Aubin. The defending Champion Antonio Cairoli injured his left knee and took no points, dropping down to third in the Championship with a 59 point gap from leader Rattray.

MX1 CLASS
Despite taking two storming starts and leading the first part of each Grand Prix moto, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing's Max Nagl was second on today's podium behind AXO KTM Silver Action's Jonathan Barragan.

The latter secured his second consecutive win and third of 2008 by winning the final moto. After winning the opening moto, Teka Suzuki WMX1's Steve Ramon ended third on the podium just one point ahead of series leader David Philippaerts of Yamaha Monster Motocross. GPKR's Sebastien Pourcel rounded off the top five from Josh Coppins as both were caught up in a first corner accident during heat one.

MX1 MOTO 1
Nagl led the group into turn one and set the pace until lap 17, when Steve Ramon took over the lead to win eventually. Nagl had some troubles in the final laps, dropping down to fourth as both Philippaerts and Barragan moved past him. Philippaerts took second from Barragan, with the Italian ending close to Ramon when the flag was waved. Ken De Dycker rounded off the top five from Tanel Leok and Mackenzie, who made Philippaerts' life difficult in a tough fight for third. Pourcel and Coppins were eighth and ninth after a first corner crash.

MX1 MOTO 2
Nagl took another holeshot and led until ten minutes to go. Barragan made a final move on the German to take the victory and the overall, while Nagl faced Pourcel's attacks. The latter came so close to Nagl in a corner that he made a mistake to avoid a crash; Pourcel then lost ground and brought the bike home in third. Coppins was a solid fourth ahead of Mackenzie and Philippaerts, who did not find an open door to pass the Brit. De Dycker and Ramon completed the top eight.

Jonathan Barragan: 1st:
"I'm very happy with the overall victory, the track was fast and there were good lines. I already had a good feeling yesterday and I knew I had a good speed. The track was easy to ride and I hope to be able to continue this good success that I have had in Sweden and here when we race in Lommel."

Maximilian Nagl:
"We did a pretty good job today, I got the holeshot in both heats but it was a bit dusty in the second heat and the visibility was bad when the sun started to go down. No we will now train in sand to get ready for the races in Lommel."

"Max was in good form the whole weekend," said KTM team boss Stefan Everts. "We already saw on Saturday that he was very fast. He was a bit nervous in the first heat but this is still a learning year for him. He got the holeshot in the second heat but in the end, Jonathan was pushing really hard."

MX1 MOTO 1
1, Steve Ramon, Suzuki
2, David Philippaerts, Yamaha
3, Jonathan Barragan, KTM
4, Maximilian Nagl, KTM
5, Ken De Dycker, Suzuki
6, Tanel Leok, Kawasaki
7, Billy MacKenzie, Honda
8, Sebastien Pourcel, Kawasaki
9, Joshua Coppins, Yamaha
10, Manuel Priem, Kawasaki

MX1 MOTO 2
1, Jonathan Barragan, KTM
2, Maximilian Nagl, KTM
3, Sebastien Pourcel, Kawasaki
4, Joshua Coppins, Yamaha, NZL
5, Billy MacKenzie, Honda, GBR
6, David Philippaerts, Yamaha, ITA
7, Ken De Dycker, Suzuki, BEL
8, Steve Ramon, Suzuki, BEL
9, Manuel Priem, Kawasaki, BEL
10, Clement Desalle, Suzuki, BEL

CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS STANDINGS
1, David Philippaerts, Yamaha, ITA, 339
2, Steve Ramon, Suzuki, BEL, 328
3, Joshua Coppins, Yamaha, NZL, 316
4, Ken De Dycker, Suzuki, BEL, 296
5, Jonathan Barragan, KTM, ESP, 284
6, Sebastien Pourcel, Kawasaki, FRA, 274
7, Maximilian Nagl, KTM, GER, 253
8, Billy MacKenzie, Honda, GBR, 235
9, Tanel Leok, Kawasaki, EST, 234
10, Marc De Reuver, Honda, NED, 178

MX2 CLASS
Red Bull KTM Factory Racing's Tommy Searle took his third GP win of 2008 snatching the home success from team mate Tyla Rattray. Ricci Racing Yamaha's Nicolas Aubin took his first season podium from French countryman Steven Frossard of CLS. KTM UK's Shaun Simpson rounded off the top five.

Reigning MX2 Champion Antonio Cairoli tangled up with another rider in the first heat, damaging his left knee and dropping out of both motos after a brave try to race.

MX2 RACE 1
Aubin started strong to lead the first half of the heat from a hungry Searle. In the remaining ten laps Searle took the first place and opened up a gap from Aubin, who finished second. Rattray recovered to third after a crash and finished ahead of Simpson and Frossard. Antonio Cairoli put together just four laps before retiring.

MX2 RACE 2
Rattray made up for moto one and took a start to flag win of the final heat in front of Searle. The latter tried to catch Rattray unsuccessfully, ending second from Frossard who secured the top three by moving past Simpson. The Brit ended fourth from Aubin. After a great start, Cairoli tried to race with Rattray but at the end of the third lap he pulled out of the race.

Tommy Searle 1st:
"I'm very satisfied with the results of the GP today. I had a good start in the first race but I took the first corner too wide. Even so I managed to win by 11 seconds. I didn't have such a good start in the second heat and I didn't really get the same rhythm as in the first but the result was important for the championship. It's a nice track, full of jumps and I enjoyed it."

Tyla Rattray 2nd
It was not so bad today, I had quite a good start in the first heat but I made a mistake and crashed. I could have done better in that one. But then I took the holeshot in the second and I led throughout the race

Nicolas Aubin, 3rd:
"I am happy but it is a shame I had to wait ten Grand Prix for my first podium. I have had a few problems getting myself up to speed but I had two weeks to get my head together before this Grand Prix and felt better on the bike. The track is very good and I enjoyed the ground and the jumps. I made a great start in the first moto and tried to push, however Tyla and Tommy are very fast at the moment and I have not had too much time leading a race and could not hold the pace until the end. The results were not bad today and a big improvement on the last GPs. I hope this will be a new beginning for me, we go to Lommel next and I like the sand. I would like a top five there before we go to Loket. I want to finish the season well for my confidence and for the team."

Antonio Cairoli, DNF:
"I am really disappointed. I liked the track yesterday and had some decent speed. I didn't have a good start in the first moto and tried to pass some riders in the beginning but it was not easy because the track was slippery from the watering. Tyla and Tommy were ahead so I knew I had to gain ground fast. I went to pass Guarneri but he came wide and cut my line. The bike went sideways down the hill and I put out my foot and felt something pull in my knee. I had so much pain that I had to stop. My doctor made a really good job in the break so I tried to start the second moto and came out of the gate in second place. The knee was not inflamed and not too painful but I was not used to the track and I got one set of bumps wrong and felt the knee react. Tommy passed me and I was starting to catch him when I over-jumped and then had shots of pain, which ended my race.

The plan now is to have some surgery this week and I really hope I can come back for Lommel. The doctor thinks the ligaments are OK, just maybe stretched a little bit but the meniscus might be broken. With the operation we have planned he said I might be able to ride after one week. The championship looks difficult now and Tommy and Tyla have worked hard to be going for the title. I want to win when I come back and I hope it will be as soon as possible."

MX2 MOTO 1
1, Tommy Searle, KTM
2, Nicolas Aubin, Yamaha
3, Tyla Rattray, KTM
4, Shaun Simpson, KTM
5, Steven Frossard, Kawasaki
6, Xavier Boog, Suzuki, FRA
7, Marvin Musquin, Honda, FRA
8, Davide Guarneri, Yamaha, ITA
9, Jeremy Van Horebeek, KTM, BEL
10, Stephen Sword, Kawasaki, GBR

MX2 MOTO 2
1, Tyla Rattray, KTM, RSA
2, Tommy Searle, KTM
3, Steven Frossard, Kawasaki
4, Shaun Simpson, KTM, GBR
5, Nicolas Aubin, Yamaha, FRA
6, Jeremy Van Horebeek, KTM
7, Xavier Boog, Suzuki, FRA
8, Marvin Musquin, Honda
9, Anthony Boissiere, KTM
10, Pascal Leuret, Suzuki

CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS STANDINGS
1, Tyla Rattray, KTM, RSA, 416
2, Tommy Searle, KTM, GBR, 395
3, Antonio Cairoli, Yamaha, ITA, 357
4, Shaun Simpson, KTM, GBR, 287
5, Nicolas Aubin, Yamaha, FRA, 243
6, Rui Goncalves, KTM, POR, 241
7, Xavier Boog, Suzuki, FRA, 211
8, Jeremy Van Horebeek, KTM, BEL, 197
9, Steven Frossard, Kawasaki, FRA, 196
10, Manuel Monni, Yamaha, ITA, 187

IN THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS STANDINGS
Ramon took one point off his gap from Philippaerts as the duo are still second and first in the Championship respectively. I was a bit tired early in the second moto and with the sun going down it was hard to find the lines. After about twenty minutes I felt a bit better and pushed to pass Mackenzie but there were so many lapped riders that it was very difficult. I did not want to crash and I had already passed Ramon. I think I will be strong for Lommel. All the GPs will be important for the championship now and I will be looking for good positions and to finish ahead of Ramon as much as possible."

Josh Coppins, Yamaha Monster Motocross Team, 6th:
"For three motos in a row I have had to start from pretty much last. I knew I had the speed but I lost so many points just from incidents in those three heats. In that second moto today I decided to start a little more cautious, take my turn and then ride my own race. I came out in the top ten but then could start the hunt and move forward; this is not really the way I want to go racing, holeshots would be preferable! It was a tough track but the same for everyone. There were parts that I liked and others that I didn't. I am pleased with that second moto though; if I can improve my starts then I feel that I can push my way back in there for the title."

Nico Aubin, Yamaha Ricci Racing, 3rd:
"I am happy but it is a shame I had to wait ten Grand Prix for my first podium. Byrne raced his Rockstar Makita Suzuki RM-Z450 to secondand third-place moto finishes to get his second overall podium of the season. Suzuki City/OTSFF/Rockstar Suzuki's Cody Cooper joined Byrne on the box, picking up his first Pro MX podium. The satellite team rider posted fifth- and second-place moto finishes to bring home the final podium spot. Byrne is currently in fourth place overall in the championship points standings, whileCooper is in eighth place. Rockstar Makita Suzuki's Mike Alessi is currently recovering from a recentcrash at Red Bud and did not race.

In the Motocross Lites class, Rockstar Makita Suzuki's Ryan Dungey celebrated his fifth podium of the season after carding two second-place moto finishes for second overall. Rockstar Makita Suzuki teammate Nico Izzi brought home eighth- and fifth-place moto finishes for a fourth-place overall result. Dungey is currently in second place overall in the championship, while Izzi is in fifth place.

Michael Byrne:
"Unadilla is a track I've always enjoyed. The layout's similar to what I've grown up with - not the rocks and the soil, but the layout of the track is like what I raced growing up. The track made a few changes this year and I liked them a lot. In the first moto, I got a really good start -- the Rockstar Makita Suzuki RM-Z450 is working really good right now and the team is working really hard - I justmissed the holeshot but I was right there in second. I heard there was a pretty good battle behind me but I just tried to keep my head down and ride as hard as I could. I got second in that moto and I was pretty pumped. Then, it started raining really hard and I'm not really a fan of the rain. I didn't getthe best start, though I was able to work my way up. Luckily for me, I'd gone with intermediate tires and that paid out for me. In the end, I could barely see but I managed to get into third and I just tried to survive until the end."

Cody Cooper:
"It was good to get my first AMA Motocross podium -- obviously I'm happy with how it went. This is my first year racing here, so I'd never been at Unadilla and in the first moto, I found out how rocky the place was. I got an average start, and hit some rocks and ended up with fifth. I think the rain helped in the second moto because I got a better start in the re-start. I suppose I feel pretty comfortableracing in the rain, but that second re-start helped out a lot. It was quite muddy and definitely if you got a bad start it would have been hard to come through. I managed to see first place the whole race so I'm real happy over that. I'm hoping for another podium, next weekend - only this time withoutthe rain. I know my confidence is up, and I just need to keep working on my starts so I can race with the guys who are at the front."

Ryan Dungey:
"The race this weekend went pretty good. I got a couple of good starts on the Rockstar Makita Suzuki RM-Z250 in both motos. The first moto was pretty good and I wound up finishing second. The second moto, I got the holeshot and I was leading for a few laps but then I made some mistakes and finished second. But I had a good time and I'm happy with the race overall."

Nico Izzi:
"It was a pretty good weekend. We were expecting a lot of rain and it held off for a while. We were able to get in a good first moto and the track was pretty dry and in good condition. I didn't get the best start - I was like in 17th and I worked my way up into eighth. Then in the second moto, I got agood start but it started to rain and they red-flagged it because of thunder and lightning. In the restart, I got another good start on the Rockstar Makita Suzuki RM-Z250 and got up into fourth place. But my goggles got messed up and I couldn't see and I ended up getting fifth, which got me fourthoverall."

AMA Motocross Top 10 (Moto Finishes)
1. Revelling in the difficult Welsh conditions, and following on from his stunning return to form at the GP of Poland, Seb again claimed the CH Racing Husqvarna team's best results as he closes in on the third place position in the Enduro 3 championship standings. Second to countryman Christophe Nambotin on day one, Seb, like all riders found the conditions in Wales extremely challenging and was fortunate to benefit from a costly mistake by Stefan Merriman having trailed the Australian in third for much of the day. With no rider able to perform mistake free due to the heavy rain and extremely slippery special tests Seb mixed good special tests performances with the occasional mistake to finish one-minute behind Nambotin and close to one-minute ahead of Finn Marko Tarkkala.

Starting well on day two with runner-up finishes in the opening two special tests, Seb performed consistently while several of his class rivals made costly mistakes. Recording the fastest times in two of the day's special tests he arrived at the ninth and final test of the day all but level with Finland's Marko Tarkkala. Needing simply to win the test in order to claim the day win Seb placed six seconds ahead of Tarkkala to stand on top of the E3 class podium for the second time in as many races.

Despite the GP of Wales being the toughest event of the '08 WEC season the CH Racing Husqvarna team's Enduro 1 class rider Bartosz Oblucki claimed two top 10 results on is return from injury. Lacking race fitness due to the hand injury he sustained at the opening round of the series Oblucki placed sixth on day one and seventh on day two.

Opting to compete on a 250cc two-stroke and not his usual 450cc four-stroke Antoine Meo finished ninth on both days in the Enduro 2 class and would likely have finished fourth in class on day two had he not unfortunately clocked into one of the day's time controls one-minute early. Finding the opening day tough Meo recorded some impressive special test performances on day two, but with one-minute being added to his special test times as a result of clocking in early he was unable to improve on his day one result despite his improved riding.Disappointingly the CH Racing Husqvarna team's Enduro Junior class rider Marc Bourgeois was unable to compete in Wales due to having broken his scaphoid prior to the event. Although it is not yet known how long Marc will be out of action it looks certain that he will miss his home GP next weekend and may not return to competition until the ISDE in Greece in early September.

Seb Guillaume: "Wales is a very beautiful country but they have very hard enduro races. It was hard, the special tests were really difficult, but it was a true enduro and I enjoyed it. I was lucky to finish second on day one because Stefan Merriman was second before the second to last special tests and then made a mistake on the extreme test, which put me second. So I was a little lucky. Day two was great - I had a really good fight with Tarkkala and Nambotin. Nambotin crashed and dropped from the top three, which left myself and Tarkkala. Before the last special test we were level on time. I managed to win the test and also the day, which I'm very happy about. It's been a great weekend."

Antoine Meo: "The team's decision to race on a 250cc two-stroke was definitely the right one because the bike worked great in the muddy conditions. The first day was so difficult because of the weather and the hard special tests. It was the hardest enduro I have competed in so far. It was impossible not to make any mistakes. I made some mistakes and they cost me minutes not seconds. The second day was going much better for me compared to the first day, but I made a stupid mistake and arrived one-minute early at one of the time controls. I should have finished fourth but ended up in ninth."

Bartosz Oblucki: "It's been a mixed weekend for me because I had some good tests and some not so good tests. But the hardest thing for me was my lack of race fitness. Because I've been injured this season I'm not as bike fit as the other riders, which made things extra hard for me. But I felt like I was riding well, my bike was really good, and I know that I just need to spend more time racing and my results will improve. It was really hard not to make any mistakes on day one because the weather was so bad. On day two it wasn't too difficult although it was still tough. I just need to keep racing now to improve my fitness and feeling with my bike."

2008 World Enduro Championship

Grand Prix of Wales - Day 1

Enduro 1 class
1. Choosing the GP of Wales to make his return to the WEC the former two-time enduro world champion and current leader of the US GNCC Series placed as runner-up to former team-mate Juha Salminen on day one and then finished third behind Frenchman Johnny Aubert and Salminen on day two.

With heavy rain falling throughout the opening day's competition the GP of Wales proved to be a grueling event. Starting near the rear of the E2 class due to being a wildcard rider Knight found it difficult to match the pace of the riders that had started ahead of him due to the rapid deterioration of both the motocross and enduro special tests. But the start of the second lap saw Knight top the enduro test as he started to pull back the time he'd lost earlier in the day. Placing second in class on the next four tests Knight then topped the penultimate special test before finishing fourth on the ninth and final test. Having had a good day, but having felt that he could have ridden harder at times, Knight finished 46 seconds behind eventual E2 class winner Juha Salminen.

Although still tough day two proved to be a little easier for all competitors due to largely dry skies but for Knight the day didn't go as smoothly as planned. Forced to fit a replacement rear shock to his bike on lap two David failed to perform at his best and opted simply to enjoy the occasion rather than push over his limits. Although not managing to win any special tests on day two Knight entertained the many supporters that had come to see him compete and placed third making it two podium results from the two-day event. Although a little disappointed that he hadn't been more competitive during the second day's competition David thoroughly enjoyed his one-off WEC outing.

David will now travel to Mexico to compete in the annual Fun Enduro event before resuming his GNCC training ahead of the re-start of the '08 championship in September.

David Knight: "I'm happy with the way the first day went - finishing second in my first WEC race in nearly two years was good and I really enjoyed it. Things didn't go quite so well on day two though, but I still finished on the podium so I can't complain too much. I was at a bit of a disadvantage starting after the top riders in the E2 class, especially early on day one but once the event got into the second lap I started to get things sorted. I knew it would take some time to get used to enduros again, but I wasn't expecting it to be quite as difficult as it was. I've spent a year-and-a half-riding at 90 per cent so it was hard to get my head around sprinting again. Every test I started I set off thinking I was in a three-hour race.

"Although the first day was hard I really enjoyed it - I'd say it's the most enjoyable race I've done in a long time. It was impossible not to make any mistakes but I managed to put in some pretty good tests. Juha was riding really well so I was a little way behind him but I was quite a way ahead of Aubert so I finished a safe second. I was pleased with things because I didn't ride over my head.

"The second day didn't go quite to plan - the rear of my bike didn't feel right from the start of the day. I changed the shock for the second lap, which was a lot better. I was still struggling to get out of the ruts. I was riding as hard as I could but Aubert was much quicker than Juha and myself so I just enjoyed myself. It's been a really good weekend."

2008 World Enduro Championship

Grand Prix of Wales - Day 1

Enduro 2 class
1.
