Proper fit is the most important requirement in a helmet-as long as the lid is a quality one in the first place. Some heads and helmets just don't match, while others fit like a glove. For those that come close, the fit can be tailored to near perfection. Troy Lee Designs' Mike David shows us how.

The most important rule is to never compress the foam to make a helmet fit. Compressing the EPS foam takes away the shock-damping properties of the lid. You'll need every bit of this in a crash!

Troy Lee Designs has a kit designed specifically for its helmets (it will work in other helmets, too) made up of adhesive polypropylene EVA foam strips to tailor the inner shape of the brain bucket to your head.

When wearing the lid, try to locate "hot spots," or areas where the inner lining is pressing too tightly on your head. At the same time, note where it is loose or where there are air gaps.

The idea is to then fill the gaps using the kit foam until the helmet fits snugly. You can test the strips' placement by laying the strips between the liner and the foam. When you are happy with the fit, peel the adhesive and stick the strips into place. This will usually take the pressure off of the former hot spots. If some tight places remain, you can sand down the EPS foam a little with gritty sandpaper, but take care not to remove too much or compress it.
