Now you're looking at the big dog. There's not another level to climb once you've reached the CRF45OR. On any type of track, this bike packs unmatched versatility. And the longer the straightaways are, the faster the CRF goes. There's practically a waiting list to get your hands on this baby as it's much improved from last year, with a new frame. Everyone who's ridden it agrees, it blows the 'O4 into the weeds. Honda's durability is a staple; the 45O will provide Formula One performance with Jiffy Lube–frequency maintenance. You get the HRCA membership and all the trick features, plus it's a Honda. These guys know how to build a bike that's as exciting to ride as a top-fuel dragster and still ridable enough to do more than just race around a track. Competitive? Just look at what top privateers in both supercross and motocross choose to ride.

Sales Pitch: Kawasaki KX250

This is the bike for you if you want power in a light and aggressive package, and at the right price—$1OOO saved is $1OOO saved, no matter how you slice it. That's a lot of track days, a complete new set of gear or a lot of spare parts. It's not as if you'll be looking for more power anytime soon, because this thing roosts! For starters, the KX is a bit quieter, as two-stroke sound doesn't carry as far, and that is a good thing. It's a no-brainer to start; and you can look at what the top guys are riding in supercross if you need more proof. Kawasaki backs you with a whopping $1O million in contingency. You'd also be supported by Team Green, a premier amateur support program. It provides trackside support at hundreds of events around the country and is available to all KX-mounted riders. It will help with any problems you might encounter and provide setup information to get your bike running at its highest level. This is the most-affordable way to get the maximum motorcycle from a horsepower perspective.

Sales Pitch: Honda CRF250R

This bike is a master of everything. It could launch you into the top ranks in the 125 class or race vet class. It has the lap times to back it up, blowing the doors off anything else in the 125 class, not to mention a 25O two-stroke or two. This baby is easy to ride fast, and the power spread is almost twice as long as that of a 125cc two-stroke. And if it's features you're after, well, this CRF is loaded. Honda has eight years of experience with production aluminum motocross frames, and this is the fourth generation, so you know it's dialed. Take the engine, for instance: The unicam design is lighter and allows for a lower center of gravity for that flickability for which the CRF is famous. Twin-sump lubrication allows you to use the best oil for the engine and transmission separately and eliminates cross contamination.
With a purchase, you'll get a one-year membership in the Honda Rider's Club of America (HRCA), with a lot of perks, discounts, travel benefits and roadside assistance for your truck if your bike is in the back! Sure, you're stepping up a level in price, but you're getting parts with names like Renthal, Dunlop, D.I.D and Showa. Plus, Honda has a CR contingency program totaling more than $7 million. There's never a worry about parts, either, as Honda has 1O warehouses across the United States and more than 12OO dealers.

Sales Pitch: Yamaha YZ125
This aluminum-framed wonder reinvented the 125cc class. You'll have a smile on your face every time you ride it. It's fast, fun and mountain-bike light. Imagine 5 pounds less than last year and 15 pounds less than the next-lightest bike in this comparison. Never mind that it's $14OO less than that 45O you may have your eye on. With Yamaha's zero-zero-zero financing program, you can take one home now for nothing, even if you have the cash in your pocket. Put that cash in a good CD account, and in six months when the payment is due, you can pay off the bike. And with the YZ Bucks program, you could be earning a contingency without ever paying a dollar! Yamahas are the only Japanese MX bikes to come with a warranty, so you can ride it hard for 3O days worry-free; but this thing's tough!
It's a simple two-stroke, so working on it is a cinch, and all it takes to freshen it up is a piston and rings. Sure, it's not as fast as the bigger models, but it's light and won't wear you out. It's easier on tires, chains and sprockets and you won't find another bike that kickstarts as simply.
