Lap Times
There weren't any real surprises in the lap times for Dirt Rider's 450cc motocross shootout. It didn't matter whether our tester was a novice, an intermediate or a pro, he was consistently fastest on the Honda CRF450R. The difference between it and the KTM was a tiny 0.3 second for the pros and just 2 seconds for the intermediates. The novice group varied less than 3 seconds from their fastest bike (CRF) to their slowest (KTM), and the Yamaha was only 0.2 second behind the CRF. These numbers are averages of all three riders in each skill category. In individual times, every bike was fastest for at least one rider.

Radar Charts
After the lap-time motos, we put identical Dunlop D756 rear and D742 front tires on the three 450s then pointed the radar gun at them to see what would stand out. A full-on drag race showed an acceleration curve of the bikes running in peak power. They looked pretty close, but the Yamaha was clearly stronger on takeoff. When we did the third-gear roll-ons, the Yamaha jumped onto the powerband as if we had hit the clutch. The YZ-F felt as if the gears were spaced closely and the engine hit like crazy then tapered off on top, and the charts show that. The KTM pulled hard on top and made good numbers on the dyno, but the Honda looks like it feels: strong, smooth and consistent. Plus, it has that fifth gear, which carries it even further; so its motor rules.

Redline Report
A steep section on the dynamometer curve is a hard hit, and the Yamaha's line is almost vertical through the midrange. The KTM has strong bottom power, then offers a softer curve (and a softer feel on the track) through the upper-rpm reaches yet, at the very top, matches the CRF. The CRF's power starts strong on the bottom and just stays strong all the way through. It makes the most or nearly the most power at every point in the rpm range. It has no dips in its power. In other words, the bike that least needs the five-speed has one—no wonder it makes us grin!
