From the outside, only graphics and the Renthal bar separate '04 from the '03.

What's New
• Every bracket and molded-rubber part of the bike was rethought and redesigned for a total weight savings of 3 pounds.
• A new clutch perch with a quick-adjust feature, an integral hot-start lever and a trick adjuster that allows you to set how far the lever is from the bar.
• A reshaped front fender and number plate and a slightly darker color to all the red plastic parts, as well as new graphics.
• A formerly works-only, first-time-in-production finish is used inside the lower fork tubes for smoother action.
• The new fork finish required stiffer valving, and the rear shock also got valving improvements.
• Engine power and character revised with lighter, higher- compression piston, lighter ignition rotor, new ignition timing and jetting changes.
• Ergonomics improved with a nonslip seat cover and Renthal 971 aluminum handlebar.
• New for '04 Dunlop D756 rear and D742 front tire combination.

What's Hot!
• Smooth, long-pulling power that has a snappier delivery.
• Very light overall feel, especially for a bike that virtually has Open class power.
• Ergonomics are unparalleled, and the nonslip cover and Renthal bar are welcome improvements.
• Suspension is extremely plush, stock settings are spot-on for most riders and bottoming resistance remains excellent.
• Starting is nearly effortless and consistent.

What's Not!
• Steering is still not scalpel-sharp, and when the front wheel slides, it slides suddenly.
• Stock gearing may be high for some riders.

As civilized as the CRF is, you'll still want to point it in a prudent direction before letting all the ponies loose.

Race-ready is how I would describe the 2004 CRF450R. Honda added a Renthal bar, a quick-adjust clutch and a gripper seat cover to a super-fast and plush ride. You can literally slap some numbers on the panels and race this bike. I owned and raced the '03 CRF450R this year, and after one quick lap on the '04, I felt more comfortable than I had on my own bike all year. The power is more responsive yet still very smooth. The suspension is more balanced, and bottoming is nonexistent. I could turn the '04 much better, and the motor makes correcting mistakes much easier. The bike is so fast, smooth and easy to ride that I felt I could ride it for hours without fatigue. Two years in a row, Honda has made a great bike better.
