KTM's work on the chassis and the suspension of the 450 EXC is most welcome.
What's Hot!
SX & EXC

• Easy starting and clean running with plenty of smooth power.
• Vastly improved suspension plushness and bottoming resistance.
• Handling in mud and ruts and steering accuracy are improved thanks to the new frame.
• Brakes are as powerful as any bike around.
• Level of standard equipment is great.
• New seat is much softer.
• Power is strong but long, and the delivery is smooth on both bikes, but the SX has noticeably more boost.
• Hydraulic clutch action is very crisp and consistent.
• SX gearbox is nicely spaced for moto, and EXC has a low first gear and a top speed of more than 90 mph.
• SX has triple clamps that allow 18 or 20mm offsets, and both bikes have bar clamps that allow four different positions.
• No tools required to change air filter, and wheel spacers stay in for easy wheel changes.

What's Not!

• EXC transmission is gappy for motocross, and SX transmission has a tall first and runs out of gear quickly off-road.
• Seat could stand more improvement, but that's more for off-road than for moto.
• Stock dual-compound grips are comfy but wear quickly.

The smooth, linear power of the 450 SX makes it super-comfortable driving off jumps.

When I first took out the KTM 450 SX, it felt really stiff as the track conditions were a bit rough. I simply could not get the bike to settle in the corners, and it was hard to get it to go where I needed it to go. After making a few compression adjustments to the shock and the fork, the bike felt as if it were a new machine. I went from being scared of it to having a ton of confidence in it. I was impressed with how different the bike felt with the changes we made to it. The KTM is very tunable. It just takes time to learn what to do and why to do it, but once you figure it all out, the Katoom is a real contender against any of the other bikes in its class.

KTM calls its bikes ready to race. I don't dispute this one bit, but I haven't felt totally comfortable to just hang it out (in other words, go at race pace) on one for a few years now. That hasn't stopped me from putting nearly 20,000 miles on my personal 400 EXC. But the new 450 is insane. I still don't want to race it, for some strange reason, but the improvements to the chassis and suspension make it way closer to where it needs to be. Especially the suspension's bottoming resistance. It feels as if the bike has 18 inches of travel now—a good and bad thing. Plus, the 450's engine is getting smoother and smoother while still packing a punch when requested. I'd trail ride this thing till the crank fell out ... and maybe race it once in a while, too.
