2004 Honda Crf250r Side Under View
McGrath has proven himself a fan of 250cc four-strokes. He had a blast on the CRF250R.
What's New
• Type four alloy frame with shorter, narrower spar tubes that have varying material thicknesses depending on anticipated loads. Frame has a much more streamlined look.
• Swingarm pivot area castings are ribbed on the inside as on previous models but are slimmer and narrower.
• Spar and extrusion junction is dipped so bike is narrow between rider's knees.
• Subframe is new (not interchangeable with, or even like, the '04 CRF450R's) with oval aluminum tubing.
• Bodywork is unique to this model, from shrouds to rear fender.
• Unlike its 450 sibling, the CRF250R only has a plastic rock guard on the frame's left side, and it is mounted without a Rivnut-type threaded insert.
• All the lightweight stuff from other '04 CR/CRF models is included.
• Narrower span on caliper mount and axle pinch bolts.
• Aluminum spacers and clamps and thinner fork guards.
• Renthal 971 handlebar is standard.
• Top of the head machined at an angle, cam bearing supports machined into the head (450 has a removable cam box) to better support cam at extreme rpm. Makes system lighter and more compact.
• Oil separated, as with 450, but engine oil drains underneath rather than on side.
• Direct ignition coil that is part of the plug cap.
• No Y-pipes in the cooling system.
• Same air filter as in 450.
• Engine oil is checked with dipstick rather than sight glass.
• Dunlop 756/742 tires are new for this year.
• 37mm Keihin--the industry standard for all high-performance 250 four-strokes.
• Sidepanel has increased airflow but is also molded in two colors.

What's Hot!
• Very light overall feel contributes to overall handling excellence.
• Chassis has excellent rider accommodations with (still) the best seat in the business.
• Engine makes good power from very low in the rpm range yet still pulls hard all the way to the (claimed) 13,000-plus-rpm rev-limiter.
• Control efforts, five-speed transmission ratios and control engagement are all usual Honda wonderful.
• Showa suspension is plush, adjustable for a wide range of riders and has superb bottoming resistance.
• Engine starting is effortless, thoughtless and stress-free--and deserving any other superlatives you can think up. Just kick and go.

What's Not!
• Suspension worked for 200-pound rider, so might be sensitive for very light riders.
• Extremely tall riders felt the rider compartment was tight between the seat and footpegs.
