2004 Yamaha Yz250 Rear Side View
Part of the airtime peace of mind comes from newfound suspension plushness.
What's New
• Lighter KYB 48mm fork with hydraulic bottoming system and stiffer (0.44kg/mm vs. 0.43kg/mm) springs replaces '03 0.46kg/mm with elastomer system.
• Fork required new triple clamps, and the lower clamp's pinch bolts are moved to the rear of the clamp instead of the side, but geometry remains the same.
• Valving in the rear shock's compression adjuster is softer, and the spring rate dropped from 4.9kg/mm to 4.7kg/mm.
• Front brake's master cylinder bladder is flat-bottomed, and there is a small "float" on the brake fluid. Both allow better brake performance.
• The front brake hose guide attaches directly to the triple clamp, and the opening in the guide is longer. Some riders are running their lever positions so high that the brake hose gets too short.
• A shorter, smaller-diameter (inner and outer) clutch cable is routed down the left side of the bike (instead of the right) to get an easier, more consistent lever pull.
• Tires are still Dunlop D739, but they have a stiffer carcass. The rear is the 739G first seen on the YZ-F, and the front is a new 739 FAL.
• Footpegs are titanium instead of steel.

What's Hot!
• Smooth and tractable yet zippy power from just above idle, and blessed with great roll-on.
• The human-machine interface is near flawless.
• Effort spent on the controls has paid off with much lighter clutch action with better feel and more consistent and powerful front braking.
• Suspension performance and chassis balance vastly improved, especially for target riders in the 150- to 180-pound range.
• External suspension adjustments are very effective.

What's Not!
• Engine doesn't seem quite happy on pump gas, and a little pinging was present.
• Riders used to modern four-strokes may find the power a little short in each gear.

The pegs didn't look too much different from the '03 bike's until we tried to stick a magnet on them. The '04 pegs are titanium.
