The electric start is handy in nasty stuff. You won't have to find level ground to restart.
What's New
• WP PDS shock fitted with a straight-rate spring (instead of progressive), and a longer needle for the PDS makes the second piston in the shock have more effect.
• WP 48mm fork has more effective midspeed valve in fork.
• Swingarm pivot bolt is increased 2mm to 17mm.
• Swingarm 10mm longer for better traction and stability.
• Gusseting around steering head changed for more strength.
• Rear master cylinder now has integrated reservoir.
• Brake discs have round holes instead of slots.
• Both models have one-piece rear fender/side number-plate combo.
• Clutch master cylinder bore reduced for easier pull at the lever and refined engagement feel.
• Air filter and cage with three retaining pins for better sealing and safety.
• Renthal 608 tapered handlebar is 12mm higher than '03.
• Dual-compound gray/orange Renthal half-waffle grips.
• Single-tube exhaust and reshaped silencer as on '03 450 SX.
• The 250 header is 38mm versus the 45mm pipe on the 450cc motor to increase torque on both engines.
• Muffler is designed to meet the California 96-decibel standard and meets emission standards, making the bike off-road-legal in California.
• Clutch features eight (instead of seven) more reliable fiber clutch plates and better oiling.
• Excel rims are new to E/XC models.
• Slim SX-style tank holds 2.4 gallons and has a tucked-in petcock.

What's Hot!
• Massively improved suspension plushness and action.
• Lighter brake and clutch efforts but with better feel to all controls.
• Lower and more compact, more mainstream ergonomic setup. Very slim and light overall feel for all models.
• Chassis balance front to rear much more neutral.
• Very clean looks and graphics that hold up well.
• Premium components are standard.
• 450 has class-leading power, and 250 is competitive but smoother and less zippy than a Yamaha WR250F.

What's Not!
• Seats are still very firm.
• Some riders notice a different feel to the linkless rear suspension.
• Bike can feel almost too narrow.
• 250 could use more torque.

The 450 E/XC has power whenever you need it - such as when lofting over logs.
