For one week in March, motorcycle enthusiasts descend upon Daytona Beach, Florida, turning the beach town into a motorcycle heaven. There's the Florida GNCC, the Daytona 200, and our personal favorite: the Daytona Supercross presented by Honda. The legendary track is known for being the toughest Supercross of the year. With its sandy turns and tricky rhythm sections this year's track was no different.
Lites pilot, Yoshihide Fukudome, started the day off right setting the fastest lap time in his second qualifying practice session of the day. His time placed him in heat race one where he got an excellent jump and was poised to get a top three start but ran out of luck when he hit the sandy first turn and went down. He jumped up and got going but eventually ran out of time in the short six lap sprint finishing 16th.
In his final trip to the Daytona Supercross Kyle Lewis wanted to make it a memorable one. "Lucky" lined up toward the outside of the gate for heat number one and proceeded to grab one of his patented holeshots. Lewis rode a strong and smart race finishing in seventh position and securing his spot directly into the main event.
Josh Summey took to the line in heat race two choosing the inside line for the start. Unfortunately Summey didn't fare as well as his teammate and was left on the ground in turn one after banging bars with another rider. Josh quickly got going again and started picking off riders left and right. He made his way into the top nine but with a half of a lap to go he made a mistake and missed the cutoff by one spot.
The Lites class LCQ saw Dome get a decent start but still had a lot of work to do with only four laps. He put in another strong race but four laps was not enough time and he crossed the line 13th. The start of the Supercross class LCQ was a little more friendly to Josh as he exited turn two sitting in sixth position. After the half way mark Josh sat in fourth and was applying the pressure to the two riders in front of him. Then, with less than one lap left two riders went down and suddenly Summey found himself in second place. He rode smart and crossed the line in second securing the final transfer spot to the main.
The Supercross main event got off to another great start as Kyle Lewis grabbed his second holeshot of the night leading the likes of Carmichael and Stewart around turn two. Josh Summey also got a good jump and rounded turn one inside the top 10. Both riders put in strong rides around the sandy and rutted out Daytona track. At the half way mark Josh and Kyle were both still on the gas with Josh in ninth and Kyle in 13th. The guys continued to pound out fast laps and as the checkered flag flew Summey crossed the line 10th with Lewis following in 14th. After pulling down two big holeshots Kyle commented; "I guess the start really favored my style this weekend. It was a nice bonus to get two starts like that, especially here in Daytona." Josh was also excited about his race; "My goal was to go out and put together 20 consistently fast laps and that's what I did. It feels good to get another top 10."
With only six races left in the series the racing is only going to get more exciting. This weekend the series stays in the "Sunshine State" and heads an hour inland to the city of Orlando and the Citrus Bowl. See you there!
