Townley was riding great, especially through the whoops. He looked like he would challenge Brayton until he stalled his bike and lost several positions trying to re-start it. He was still kicking when Grant and his teammate Gosselaar came around and lapped him.
The front group stayed smooth and in position for the remainder of the twenty laps. The final resuts were -
1. Josh Grant
2. Chris Gosselaar
3. Justin Brayton
4. Jake Weimer
5. Sean Collier
6. Steve Boniface
7. Troy Adams
8. Kelly Smith
9. Matt Goerke
10. Ben Townley
11. Josh Hansen
12. Eric Sorby
The supercross class then lined up for the main event of the evening. The race was decided in the first corner as Stewart pulled the holeshot and Carmichael hit the ground. Carmichael went into the first corner too hot and lost the back end. He spun around completely backwards before coming to a stop.
Carmichael kept the engine running and got going quickly, but he was already too far behind to have any hope of beating Stewart, who was pulling away already from Kevin Windham in second and Ivan Tedesco in third. Josh Demuth held forth in front of Ferry, Vuillemin, Byrne, Brock Sellards, and Chad Johnson.
Ricky's fall did make the race exciting as he worked his way through the field and picked of riders one at a time. Ricky was on the gas early in the corners but never looked desperate or wild. By lap six of the 25 lap main Ricky was up to Vuillemin. By lap eight he was reeling in Byrne. On lap nine he was working on Ferry... All while out front Stewart was pulling a comfortable gap. On lap ten Ferry went high on the berm before the whoops and Ricky ducked under and motored away.
By lap eleven Ricky was challenging his teammate Tedesco for third, while Windham had a full straightaway on the two, and Stewart was gone. Carmichael got around his teammate and was up on Windham's rear wheel by lap eighteen. Windham went into the corner before the whoops too hot, and slid up to a stop at the top of the berm. Ricky ducked under him in a replay of his pass on Ferry and pulled away through the whoops, riding a wheelie through the second half of them.
But Stewart had two full straightaways on Ricky and would not be caught. The final finishing order was -
1. James Stewart
2. Ricky Carmichael
3. Kevin Windham
4. Ivan Tedesco
5. Tim Ferry
6. Michael Byrne
7. David Vuillemin
8. Josh Demuth
9. Chad Johnson
10. Keith Johnson
11. Brock Sellards
12. Cole Siebler
The US Open is a two-night event, with an overall winner decided by the two nights' mains. A win tomorrow night would give Carmichael the overall.
Stewart and Carmichael both looked fast and comfortable, and both looked like they wanted to win. Saturday night promises to be a good one.
