Yamaha Monster Energy Ricci’s Ken De Dycker taking his first win of 2010 during the German Grand Prix with two moto wins. Marvin Musquin won in the MX2 class despite a strong Ken Roczen dominated the final heat in front of his home fans.
Clement Desalle took second on the MX1 podium courtesy of two third place finishes while an ill David Philippaerts was third overall. Tony Cairoli retained the red plate as he ended fourth overall ahead of Xavier Boog.
Ken Roczen won heat two in dominant style but took second overall on the podium as he was slowed down in heat one by problems to his goggles. Zach Osborne was third and mounted on his third consecutive podium. Jeremy Van Horebeek and Steven Frossard completed the top five.
MX1 CLASS
Ken De Dycker managed to take his first season’s overall victory in Germany, where he won both moto’s after hard fights with his rivals on the day of his 26th birthday. Taking an early lead in heat one, De Dycker pulled away to win with a nine second advantage from David Philippaerts. In moto two instead the Belgian had to work his way up to first and was chased by Tony Cairoli until the chequered flag, which he crossed just two tenths of a second before the Italian.
After taking his first season’s pole yesterday, Rockstar Teka Suzuki World MX1’s Clement Desalle struggled in the races and made it to an eventual second overall. The Belgian was leading the opening heat when he crashed and recovered to an eventual third after a three way battle for second with Boog and Philippaerts. In the second heat Clement Desalle was leading again but was passed first by De Dycker then by Cairoli and took another third place.
Yamaha Monster Energy Motocross’ Philippaerts completed the podium despite being ill. The Italian fought hard for second in heat one and completed the day with a fifth place in moto two.
Defending world champion Tony Cairoli of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing MX1 was a bitter fourth overall.
Tony tangled up with Tanel Leok at the start of heat one and was forced to recover from the tail of the group to sixth. In moto two the MX1 Championship leader rode strong to trouble De Dycker in the final laps and take an eventual second place.
The Kawasaki rider Xavier Boog completed the top five after leading both races. The French was fast in the early stages of both heats –he even took the holeshot in heat one- but dropped down the bottom of the top five as the races went on.
Red Bull KTM Factory Max Nagl (home rider) took sixth overall despite riding with a broken left collarbone during the French GP.
Italian Davide Guarneri, who was a solid third in yesterday’s qualifying, was ninth overall as he struggled during the GP heats while Honda fellow rider Ferris of Australia ended his maiden GP in 16th place.
Martin Honda’s Jimmy Albertson returned for the first time since his qualification crash at Glen Helen for round six and finished two tentative motos for the first time since Portugal scoring points with 15-13 for 12th; his best haul since the third Grand Prix of the season.
Ken De Dycker:
"I always expect to do well and hope for a good result and it came here because of hard work after the Grand Prix of France when we tested a lot and now we seem to be going in the right direction. This was the best birthday present I could give myself! Both motos had some good racing and Tony came close to me at the end of the second one. I was feeling tired at that moment and wanted the race to be over when I jumped past and saw '3 minutes' on the clock! I knew I would have to dig deep. He couldn't get near enough and it was exciting. The track was not easy but I tried to stay relaxed and saw a few places where I could overtake; my goal then was to get close enough to be able to attack in those places. I hope this is the point that my season will turn around and although the next GPs won't be easy I can now feel more confident and want to be strong until the end of the season."
Clement Desalle:
"I am not really satisfied because I am second and I wanted the win but I rode well; did not have any bad crashes; and my shoulder continues to feel strong so I am happy for that. I made a mistake in the Moto 1 and it was costly. I had a nice fight with David and that was fun but I had suffered another error at an important time in the second moto when I was forced to go outside on a corner. Ken and Antonio were too fast. I will take each GP at a time and want to do my best."
David Philippaerts:
"In the first moto I had a good feeling with the bike and the track but I have not slept well for the last four days because of a cold and really felt tired in the second race. It was hard to pass out there with really only one fast line, the rest of the track was so bumpy, and I lost time and energy stuck behind Nagl. To finish on the podium after feeling sick is very positive. Now I will go to Belgium and recover fully before doing some training in the build-up to Latvia."
Jimmy Albertson:
“I went into this weekend not expecting a great deal because I have not done much riding and training as I was trying to get my body healed-up. I rode my own race and ended up fifteenth and thirteenth so I was happy with that. I remember the first round in Bulgaria when I was completely healthy and ready to go and that turned out worse! It was a good weekend and I was just glad to finish some motos because I hadn’t done that since Portugal and round five. Just to get back on the track was great and gives me something to build on for next weekend.”

MX2 CLASS
It was again Marvin Musquin who topped the podium at the end of the German Grand Prix, which marked victory number seven of 2010 for the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing MX2 rider from France. Musquin took victory in the first moto after moving past team mate Herlings but could not overtake second moto leader Ken Roczen, ending first ahead of Musquin.
Second overall was last year’s German GP winner Roczen. The Teka Suzuki Europe World MX2 teenager struggled with his goggles in the first heat, riding with no eyes protection and dropping down from third to fifth. In the final moto instead Roczen took a dominant victory to secure the overall podium and reinforce his second place in the series behind Musquin.
Bike-it Cosworth Yamaha UK’s Zach Osborne was third overall as he took his third consecutive podium since his home GP in USA. Osborne struggled in the opening heat and took a fourth place with just two laps to go. He performed better in the final moto, ending third and securing the overall podium.
Kawasaki CLS’ racers completed the top five but it was a bitter result for the squad having Steven Frossard in fourth and Jeremy Van Horebeek in fifth. After taking second and third in moto one with Van Horebeek and Steven Frossard respectively, both crashed in moto two and had to work hard to get back into the top ten.
Tonus was sixth ahead of Christophe Charlier and Shaun Simpson, with the latter taking the holeshot in moto two. Paulin and Vongsana completed the top ten.
Jeffrey Herlings stopped for technical issues in heat one and was eighth in moto two for a final 13th.
Marvin Musquin:
"I didn't win the second heat but I did win the GP and that's the most important thing. The track is a little different from last year and it was a bit heavy. Now I will go home and train in the sand to prepare for the next race and like always, I will try to do my best. I enjoyed the atmosphere and it was great to hear the people here in Germany cheering for me. It was great in France last time because that's my home GP but I thought it would be different here in Germany!"
Ken Roczen:
"The first moto was really difficult but not just for me but also my family and the whole team. I couldn't clear my goggles and had to dump them. It was impossible to get close to people and was hard when I was behind backmarkers I had to slow down and was really frustrated. After that I really wanted to do something special for all the fans that were cheering me and was really focussed. I made a good start and make some quick passes so I had a clear track. When I saw I had a good gap I turned the speed down a little bit and kept the rhythm. The track was difficult for passing but with a good eye you can always do something. There were a few lines out there but many people were using the same. It was an unbelievable feeling riding here. The people seemed to go crazy and I want to thank all of them."
Zach Osborne:
"I think I have come to a peak in my fitness and my riding abilities are where they should be. I am happy with the way things are going with the team and the bike and I am enjoying the races. I was struggling to come through in the first moto and got lucky when Ken Roczen had to throw away his goggles. I did not quite gel with the track this weekend but overall it was a good GP and to have another podium."
