JG Off-road/GEICO Powersports/Monster Energy Kawasaki's Paul Whibley is currently the dominating off road racer for '09, points leader in the Parts Unlimited OMA Nationals, winning six consecutive rounds, along with leading the GNCC points series. This past weekend Whibley would lead and dominate the Spring Creek MX/Ti Lube/Storm Lake Honda backed Alex Martin in the woods section at the Motion Pro presented famous Spring Creek GP held in Millville, Minnesota. Martin the son of renowned former Hare Scramble Champion, John Martin, would stay back and stalk the talented woods racer, Whibley throughout the eight-mile course. "I probably could've passed Paul on the motocross track, but I wanted to kind of stay behind him and save as much energy as I could for the end of the race," Martin stated. Martin would have to take an extra fuel stop and consume time with the twist off gas cap, which would ultimately cost him valuable time in catching Whibley at the end.
Whibley knew he would have a disadvantage on the motocross track where Martin resides, but at the same time he knew this would be only a small portion of a course laid out by OMA promoter Bill Gusse. "I knew he was going probably as good as he could go in the tight stuff, and I wasn't overly concerned that I couldn't beat him," Whibley said. "I knew I could still go faster in the tight stuff."
Rounding off the podium was Whibley's JG Off-road/GEICO Powersports/Monster Energy Kawasaki teammate, Scott Watkins. Watkins raced his own race for the third place position throughout the event, falling back from Whibley and Martin. His race has not gone un-noticed; Watkins is currently second in the points with his OMA debut year.
