Fly Racing Sector Boot Review

DR Tested

$439.95

Fly Racing has stepped into the premium boot market with its new Sector boot. If you recognize the boot, it’s because Fly Racing collaborated with TCX to model the Sector after the Pro 2.1 model TCX boot. This is not to say that this is a direct copy with just the Fly Racing brand marked on them. The Sector boot has new features like an inner bootie system with gel inserts, updated burn guard, the replaceable sole is a single compound (versus a dual compound in the TCX boot) for better durability, and positive latch-style aluminum buckles for a secure closure. We are glad Fly Racing kept the TCX Pro 2.1 torsion control system that is designed to reduce excessive range of motion that is prone to cause ankle injuries.

Slipping into the Sector boot I noticed right away the sizing is true to my size-11 feet, and the comfort of the foot bed was surprisingly cushy. The ankle area is snug and feels slightly narrower than other boots, so I suggest riders with wider feet try the Sector boot on before purchasing. The positive latch buckle system was extremely easy to lock and unlock and didn’t require a hammer to get them opened and closed. Once out on the track and riding I found that these boots take slightly longer to break in than others I have worn recently. The Sectors took me almost a few hours of riding time to be able to feel the shifter and rear brake pedal. Once broken in, however, the performance of the boot was superb. I do have some hardware in my left ankle, which makes me slightly timid on big slap-down flat landings. The Sector boot gave me enough cushion and protection on hard landings, which left me with an extra sense of security when I “cased” something, or when I made a mistake and dragged my foot behind me in a deep rut. The inner bootie didn’t irritate or rub my Terminator-like ankle, and the rubber-bottomed sole felt like it absorbed some of the vibration typically felt through the pegs.

Gripping the sides of the bike will take some extra work due to the narrow feeling of the boot; however, the soles are also extremely grippy, and I never had an issue with slipping a peg (even on worn-out, dull, stock pegs). I am usually extremely hard on soles and wear them out fairly fast, but I was surprised that the bottoms of the Sectors are looking great after more than 25 hours of riding time. The latches haven’t come undone on me while riding, and the white colorway still holds its color after several washes and sitting in the sun.

While the $439.95 retail price of the Fly Racing Sector boot is slightly less than a premium boot, the quality and durability are right on par with other top-tier boot competitors. The only downside is that this boot only comes in a white or black colorway, which is a bummer for me, as I like to have more choices with all the gear color combos that Fly Racing has to offer. —Kris Keefer
