SB2 National Supermotard Opener – News – Dirt Rider

Then newest national series took off last weekend just outside ofPhoenix Arizona and it wasn’t motocross, off-road enduro or road racing-or wasit? Supermoto, or what some call supermotard is a sport that has been slightlyunderground here in the States but fairly large in Europe. It brings back theconcept from the 70s to mid 80s ABC Superbikers which combines road racing,motocross and dirt track all in one event. The idea was to find out who was thebest athlete aboard a motorcycle. Today, the sport is starting to gainattention and riders are starting to lace up 17-inch wheels, lower suspensionand mount up oversized brakes.

The godfather of freestyle and former motocrosser Mike Metzgersurprised even road racing legend Scott Russell. Even national road racingchampion Jason Pridmore, who was just introduced to the sport, was surprisedhow fast some of the riders go since most of them don’t road race. At thisevent, Metz had the advantage through the gnarly motocross section thatdeveloped ruts, square edged bumps and deep sand berms. Trying to ride amotocross bike in deep sand with 17-inch grooved road racing slicks as hard astrying to catch a greased pig.
