The AMA Nationals Vs. The FIM World Championships – Dirt Rider Magazine

<p>On April 1, 2010, just days after the Glen Helen round had been dropped from the AMA Outdoor National schedule, the raceway announced an FIM World Motocross Championship round would replace it. A 2010 United States Grand Prix. Some thought it was an April Fool’s prank. But it wasn’t, and California’s hosting of the world’s two major motocross series nearly collided on the map and calendar during one week in May.<em>“This is now truly a world championship. And we’re going to educate the local Southern California fan base about World motocross.”</em><br />
<em><strong>-Dr. Bud Feldcamp, Glen Helen Track Owner</em></strong><em>“If for a moment you close the eyes, and you can imagine to have the top 15 American riders for each class, with the top of the rest-of-the-world riders for each class… I think the Grand Prix in the U.S. will be the best Grand Prix in the world, better than the Grand Prix of Europe.”</em><br />
<em><strong>-Giuseppe Luongo, President of Youthstream</em></strong>While Glen Helen did final-week prep for its first USGP since 1992, the AMA series kicked off 350 miles north just outside of Sacramento with the Hangtown National. On its second year of the one-day, Saturday-only schedule, the event provided a day of great racing with the U.S.’s top racers on a perfectly prepped track. The race had its usual share of foreign racers seeking an AMA #1 plate, as well as several American riders who’d done their share of racing in Europe.<em>“I was so focused on winning as many titles in Europe. I didn’t regret it, but when I come back and I see the track here [at Hangtown], the track design and the layout, it looks so great, well-prepared, it’s like, ‘Yeah, I missed something.’ [Laughs] I should have come out and done some Nationals or a season of Nationals.” </em><br />
<em><strong>-Stefan Everts, 10-Time World MX Champion</strong></em><em>“I thought Hangtown was a smash hit. I’ve never seen a bigger crowd [there]. We had four different moto winners, and the ambulance never moved. If you’re going to point at what a successful National should look like, Hangtown would be near the front of the best.”</em><br />
<em><strong>-Davey Coombs, Vice President of MX Sports Pro Racing</strong></em>The following weekend at Glen Helen, attendance was clearly down from the crowd the National usually draws. Likely the culprits were expensive ticket prices ($70 for both days, $50 for Sunday-only), the lack of top American rider participation and a holiday weekend booking.<em>“[Ryan Dungey] just finished the supercross series, 17 races basically back to back, he had one weekend off that we had to use for testing that week. And now we start a 12-race series, and we’ve only had one event, and it wasn’t a good one for us. We didn’t do very good. We need to keep our rider focused and hungry and our team also, so I think it’s tough to do everything. If [the USGP] would have come at the end of the season, we would have participated most likely. Ryan, he was tempted to come out, he wants to race against European riders.”</em><br />
<em><strong>-Roger DeCoster</em></strong>U.S. race fans don’t know the Euro racers and are mostly still under some outdated assumptions that the talent pool in the World series is greatly inferior to the crop of talent in America. It’s hard to draw direct comparisons, but for example, Ben Townley commanded the second USGP MX1 (450) moto from the start and had only placed sixth overall (6,7) one weekend before at Hangtown. Yet Mike Alessi, who ran away with the second moto win at Hangtown (4,1), matched his second overall with a (2,4) at the World round.<em>“The competition in Europe-I’ve been over there 11 or 12 years off and on and I think since then the competition has gotten a lot better. A lot deeper field. Today I think those guys are just as fast, especially on their tracks, as the American guys.”<br />
<strong>-Mike Brown</strong></em><em>“They’re awesome riders. I took ‘em to Pala so they could break their bikes in and ride, and there were a lot of people [U.S. pro riders] out there, and they were right on par with those guys.” <br />
<strong>-Bones, Pro Circuit Suspension Tech</strong></em><em>“If we can race together, Europeans and Americans, it’s nice for the public and for everybody. So I would like if they can make it [on the] calendar [so] we can have opportunities to race together.”<br />
<strong>-Antonio Cairoli, Defending MX1 World Champ, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing</strong></em>Last year MX Sports adopted a one-day Saturday schedule, while Youthstream sticks with a stretched-out two-day schedule. U.S. events give the riders two 15-minute practices to nab a fast enough lap time to qualify into the 40-rider field. Gate pick is also determined by these “best single” lap times. Once the gates are determined, the racers line up for two 30-minute-plus-two-lap motos.<em>“The racing is a lot better [in the U.S.] than in Europe for me. I like the Saturday race and the team and what they do for you.” <br />
<strong>-Christophe Pourcel</strong></em><em>“I’m OK with that [one day]. Just need some laps to feel good. If I feel good on my bike and everything before, I have no problem with that. I don’t need to ride one or two days on the track to feel good there.” <br />

<p><em>“For me, everything’s so short here [in the U.S.]. Like, practice is so short, races are so short; everything comes around so quickly.” <br />
<strong>-Tommy Searle</strong></em><em>“[In U.S. racing] you’re asking these guys who don’t know these tracks, especially these kids, to go out there and they get five minutes of free practice then they’ve got to pin it to qualify with five minutes of learning a new track. That’s dangerous. And then also it’s bad for the track because that makes it a one-lined track because everyone is just going for the fastest line.”<br />
<strong>-Ryan Hughes</strong> </em>World rounds give the riders two 35-minute practices, one free, then one timed on Saturday to qualify into a Saturday afternoon race (20-minute-plus-two-laps) for the pole (gate pick). The racing for Championship points takes place the next day, starting with a 20-minute warm-up session, then two 35-minute-plus-two-lap motos per class.<em>“The one-day event benefits the top teams more than the privateer or semi-privateer because the top teams have more experience and more people to do things in the reduced time. I don’t think there’s as many benefits to [the one-day format] as some people like to think.” <br />
<strong>-Roger DeCoster</strong></em><em>“You see it in the fans. The fans in the GPs are amazing. They lived it, they loved it, they sat there for a week camped out. And [in the U.S.] it’s just in and out, everything’s so quick-it’s like our food here. The racing’s starting to become like our fast food. ‘Let’s go, let’s get it done as quick as we can so we can go back to business and we can try to make as much money as we can.’ “<br />
<strong>-Ryan Hughes</strong></em><em>“In the GPs they have time to change tires, to try different tires. [In the U.S.] with the 15 minutes if you change tires, the session is gone, so the bike more or less needs to be ready on Saturday morning.” <br />
<strong>-Wilfred Vanmel, KTM Suspension Tech</strong></em>A World Championship suggests greater travel distances between events, but with the exception of the U.S. and Brazil rounds, 13 of 15 of the FIM races take place within Europe. By contrast, the U.S. series crosses one large continent and often requires longer distances between events. The result is top U.S. riders fly to events, while World competitors, even the top factory riders, will travel by motor home and often stay on the road for more than one race at a time.<em>“I’m comfortable with [being on the road for extended periods] because we have a good, big motor home, from the U.S. also, with slide-outs and everything and I have my PlayStation with me, which is important also to have a little bit of fun, but I don’t get really tired of it.”<br />
<strong>-Ken Roczen, Teka Suzuki</strong></em><em>“I drive in my motor home to almost half of the calendar, the season. But I live in Belgium so Germany, Holland, France, Italy, they’re very close so I always drive… I fly half races and drive half races.” <br />
<strong>-Antonio Cairoli</strong></em>Both series have professionally prepped and designed tracks, but the World policy is to leave the track alone, other than watering, once the practice sessions begin on Saturday, leading to sometimes brutally rough tracks by the time the dust has settled on the weekend. U.S. tracks are generally ripped deeper and more uniformly from venue to venue, with track work done between motos if needed to keep conditions optimal.<em>“We do not have a cookie-cutter palette for what a track should look like or how big the jumps should be… All we do at MX Sports is try to work with [the promoters] to be consistent in things like how and when to apply water, what kind of jumps will work and won’t work, and that’s kinda something we’ve all learned together as the sport’s evolved… I think the best motocross tracks in the world are the ones we see every weekend at AMA Motocross.” <br />
<strong>-Davey Coombs</strong></em><em>“[In the U.S.] all the tracks are pretty much all ripped deep. They’re pretty much all the same soil, except for Southwick, that’s a little bit sandy, whereas in Europe you’ve got a hardpack track, then you’ve got a sand track. Some races it’s raining, raining, raining, and then you’ve got a full-on mud race. The tracks vary a lot in Europe.”<br />
<strong>-Tyla Rattray</strong></em><em>“[A fast or slow track] doesn’t really matter for me, but I like those kinds of tracks that have many lines to pass. In Europe they put always a lot of water, but mostly there’s not many lines so it’s difficult to pass.” <br />
<strong>-Steve Ramon, Rockstar Teka Suzuki</strong></em><em>“Here in America because it’s one group, MX Sports, the tracks are sort of prepared similarly. It doesn’t matter what the layout is or the difference in dirt, it’s more consistent.”<br />
<strong>-Grant Langston</strong></em><em>“The balance of the bike is a little bit different [in the U.S.]. They normally ride stiffer on the fork because I think it is more or less common that the tracks are faster and you have to brake much harder into the corner, and the back end is a little bit lower. Setting-wise it’s more or less the same, it’s only a balance thing.”<br />

<p>Youthstream and MX Sports clash personalities in the way they run their operations. Youthstream is strict, with a “big government” feel, while MX Sports has the reputation for ruling with more leniency and “wiggle room.” Both groups enforce strict starting gate lineup procedures, requiring rider, bike and mechanic to arrive on time. Tools cannot be used to prep the launch area behind the gate, but in AMA it’s generally the mechanic getting his shoes dirty. In FIM racing the rider and mechanic are separated by a barrier and the rider alone must prep his behind-gate spot.<em>“Even when I was over there 10 years ago the level of professionalism, how they did the paddock, everything’s just so structured, so nice. There’s no gray areas, it’s black and white. I remember my mechanic was late to staging by a minute, and I couldn’t race the first GP moto because he was late; there was no arguing about it. Here in the AMA, ‘Well… maybe…’ It’s a gray area.”<br />
<strong>-Ryan Hughes</strong></em><em>“In our company we have 135 employees who do only the motocross and a little bit of supermoto in Europe, but here [USGP] we bring only 65 because for a lot of the production we have to rent here; we cannot ship the big trucks and so on. But we have people working all the different departments from the track to the press, a little bit everywhere.” <br />
<strong>-Giuseppe Luongo</strong></em><em>“You ask me which one’s best, I don’t know, because sometimes it seemed ridiculous to me how strict they were at the FIM because sometimes it spoiled the show, but then sometimes it’s frustrating with the AMA because it’s so relaxed you never know exactly what’s going to happen. Very different styles.”<br />
<strong>-Kurt Nicoll, former Director of Racing, KTM</strong></em><em>“They’re very well structured. Everybody there knows what’s going on with Youthstream and FIM; there’s nobody you can’t walk up to and get an answer from. Some of the other races we race you gotta find one guy to get the answer you’re looking for. Or you spend a week and a half trying to get a hold of him. It’s definitely a lot of work to race one [FIM] race; it’s a lot of paperwork, a lot of money to come race one race. But in the end it’s a great bunch of guys to work with, and I hope we work with them in the future more.”<br />
<strong>-Mike Young, MotoConcepts Team Manager</strong></em><em>“In Europe it’s a different federation in every country, different organization, you deal with different people with different attitudes, different whatever. Here it’s the same people, it’s like a family atmosphere. I like the setup they’ve got [in the U.S.]“</em><br />
<strong>-Grant Langston</strong></em>MX Sports has instituted a new age rule, abandoning the old 16-year-old minimum. By 2011, 18 will be the minimum age allowed to compete, while in FIM racing the limit is 15. Ken Roczen won his first GP last year at 15 years old, and this year 15-year-old Jeffrey Herlings won his.The FIM/Youthstream are also much more strict on noise, lowering the bike output levels over the years, and this year switching to the two-meter max-rpm test, for a more realistic assessment of a bike’s sound output at race speed. Contrary to the typical strictness, there was a feeling that these sound rules were not being held to the letter of the law at the U.S. round.And then there’s the issue of money. The long-held belief is that there is more money to be made in U.S. racing than in Europe, but that discrepancy may be leveling out. There’s also Youthstream’s controversial policy of not providing purse money to the racers in the World rounds, at the benefit of putting more money back into the tracks and facilities.<em>“The bonuses are like pretty heavy because I have to be on the podium to get something, but it’s OK. I don’t like when people earn a lot of money [when] they don’t need to do something before it. I prefer to ride before my money. To be on the podium, I get the money. How do you tell it? Like a present.” <br />

<p><em>“The purse money thing doesn’t even cross my mind… for a company like Feld [the Supercross promoter] to fill Atlanta stadium, 80K people, if the average ticket price is $30, that’s $2.4 million in one night, and then they pay the Lites main event winner like $2,500 or something. I would almost rather get no prize money than to take almost a slap in the face like that.”<br />
<strong>-Zach Osbourne, American racing the World Championships for Bike It Cosworth Yamaha</strong></em><em>“I have both; a salary to be safe, in case something happens I have at least some money, and also bonus. But the bonus is difficult because it’s only when you’re on the podium. If you’re fourth, you have zero; if you’re one, two, three, you have some. So it’s really difficult… You can choose [per moto or overall]. I have per moto… If I finish top three [at the Glen Helen GP], I for sure gain money because it’s the bonus what I have from KTM, but if I finish maybe fourth place, then I lose money here.” <br />
<strong>-Max Nagl, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing</strong></em><em>“At the top level [the small purse money] doesn’t really matter, but our sport isn’t made from the top level. Our sport is made from the people who have to buy the sh@$…” <br />
<strong>-Ryan Hughes</strong></em><em>“This is a professional sport, and as long as MX Sports has anything to do with outdoor motocross in America, there will be purse money. I’m a former pro rider, I know how important it is.”<br />
<strong>-Davey Coombs</strong></em>It looks like California is going to be a meeting ground for the two distinctly different series for years to come. Hangtown has its U.S. race, and Glen Helen has at least four more years of World rounds. And to add another twist, Southern California picked up a new AMA round with the addition of the Outdoor National season finale at Pala Raceway, just another 70 miles south.The turnout was shamefully low at the USGP this year, but this was the spark, not the fire. Perhaps next year both rounds will be an opportunity to cross-pollinate the racers, with FIM regulars bombarding a National and AMA riders infiltrating the Glen Helen event. There is even talk, not officially at this point, of having one, or more, combined World and National points-paying rounds in the U.S. Or perhaps it will just take a more convenient date on the calendar to make the two series better for everyone-teams, riders and fans. It could be the best of both worlds.<em>“I always liked changes between countries. When I was racing I always tried to go to the next country and the next country. I always wanted to work on making our sport more international. I’ve done that all my life. I’ve come here and help grow the sport here. I’ve taken Americans to go win in Europe. I like to see our sport as big as possible. I’ve always been that way. And I feel that the position we are in, that’s kind of our job.”<br />
<strong>-Roger DeCoster</strong></em><em>“Do you know who organized the 1990 Grand Prix on this soil [Glen Helen]? It was Mr. DeCoster. [Eric Geboers won that event.] We have good memories of this event. I do for sure. I must say that’s the only trophy which I know exactly in my house where it is. You can blind me today and I can say where it stands.”<br />
