Irvine, Calif. (August 1, 2012) – Monster Energy Kawasaki Team Green kicked off the second day of competition at the AMA Amateur National Motocross Championships at Loretta Lynn’s in Hurricane Mills, Tenn., with four moto wins. Team Green’s Brandy Richards started the day on the right foot by grabbing the first moto win in the Women 14+ class, which was followed by Adam Cianciarulo’s win in the Supermini 2 class. Carson Mumford powered his Kawasaki to take the checkers in the 65 (7-11) Mod class while Mike Treadwell dominated the Senior 40+ class. Strong finishes continued throughout the day as Kawasaki riders moved into the second motos. In total Team Green riders captured 17 podium finishes throughout a great day of racing.
Monster Energy Kawasaki Team Green’s Mumford is new to Team Green this year, but is quickly proving a rising star on his KX™65. Mumford started the week with a come-from-behind ride to finish fifth in the 65 (10-11) Stock class on Tuesday. In the second day of racing, Mumford grabbed the moto win in the 65 (7-11) Mod class and was back on the podium with a third-place finish in the second moto of the 65 (10-11) Stock class. We caught up with Mumford under the Team Green tent in Greenville to talk about the week.
Team Green: What have you been up to leading up to this week at Loretta’s?
Carson Mumford: For Loretta’s I’ve been working with my trainer Buddy Antenez and he’s been working us hard. We’ve been doing a lot of drills and riding 25-minute motos because the motos are 20 minutes here at Loretta’s. This way 20 minutes should feel easier and to get ready for the heat, we’ve been riding in black sweatshirts. It’s really hot! The temperature hasn’t been too bad so far, but the hotter the better now.
TG: Do you do any cross training when you’re not on your Kawasaki?
CM: I like to mountain bike and I have an indoor trainer where I can spin for 20-30 minutes. Before racing got started I went over to the creek here in the pits and drove the paddleboats around, it was fun.
TG: What’s your favorite part about coming to Loretta’s?
CM: That’s a hard question. I really like coming here and getting to see all my friends from the races, but I also like the track and love racing. It’s always a fun week.
TG: You’ve gotten off to a great start so far and got on the podium twice today. Tell us about your motos.
CM: My first moto was okay, I had to come from the back and only got fifth. Today was awesome though. I got about a fourth-place start and made my way into third. Second place went down in front of me so I only had to work on the leader. I got by him and kept it together to take the win.
TG: That being your first moto win at Loretta’s, take us through those last couple laps while leading.
CM: Oh man, the last two laps it started getting to me. I just had to ride smooth and keep my four or five-second lead. I kept telling myself “No mistakes, don’t crash, just ride!”
TG: With that win you’re in contention for that the 65 (7-11) Mod title, but also still in it for the 65 (10-11) Stock class.
CM: In the stock class I went 5-3 in the motos so far. I’m still in it, but I need to win the last moto for sure. I think I could have won today, but a crash dropped me to third. I trained really hard to get here, so I don’t want to crash and end my week, but I don’t want to cruise either. I’m here to win, so you need to have a balance.
