A lot of guys ask me why I don't surf when it's 4 to 6 feet. It's because it's 20 feet and perfect every day at the track!
I've been riding for about six years. Sunny Garcia got me into it. I was at a BBQ at his house and he has a track right there. I had to try it. I broke my collarbone trying to make one of the jumps. But that was it. I didn't want to stop riding. I caught the fever.
Now Honda hooks me up with a bike and a ski for the tow-in stuff we do. I'm stoked because all I've ever ridden are Hondas.
When I first started I didn't have any money, but I went out and bought a CR500. It was thrashed so I ended up getting another one, then a CR250. Once I rode one of Sunny's CRF450s; I was hooked on motocross and on four-strokes.
I do a lot of trail riding at home on Kauai. We have some sick trails and I can ride right out of my house. We have the meanest trail close by, it's like carving perfect turns on a big wave or snowboarding. It has perfect berms. But our trails are so tough that I can't even get Broc Little (another big wave surfer-Ed.) to come and ride here with me, and he's a good trail rider.
Every year on Labor Day we have the state race on Kauai. Our club, the Kauai Motocross Racing Association, puts on a pretty big event. There's a hare scramble, motocross and trials all wrapped up into the weekend, and they even have this huge luau. This year the hare scramble took me five hours to finish, I did two classes at MX and then did the trials. It's sick because there were like 15 containers coming in with bikes from off island. Some of the guys even come from the mainland to do it. It's really cool when pros come over; they get to see what we have over here.
I've been doing the Surfercross ever since I've been riding. It's pretty cool, but the waves always suck. I'm going to have a friend make me a special board for next year that's super thick and big enough for me to catch some of those ankle slappers you call waves.
Riding and surfing are the same when you get that feeling of carving a berm or carving a turn on a big wave. The jumping can be crazy like paddling into a 20-footer. You don't want to mess up.
