Blake Baggett got off to a rough start to the 2013 season when he was involved in a first turn pileup in the 250 main event at the Anaheim Supercross opener, resulting in a broken bone in his wrist. After missing the rest of the supercross season, the Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki rider came into the outdoor series hoping to pick up where he left off. However, it was not until the fifth round of the series at Budds Creek that Baggett finally got his first win of the season, and he currently sits third in points after a 2-8 performance at Southwick.
Dirt Rider spoke with Baggett at the Southwick round to see what his thoughts were on the season so far.
Q: How is the wrist doing?
A: The wrist is definitely doing better; we’re making improvements with it each and every week and one of these days it’ll be back to 100% for sure. But we’re working with what we’ve got and we made a lot of progress with the finish we had at Budds Creek, and that built a lot of confidence to be able to run with those guys and pass them and get out front. It definitely feels a lot better, and we’ll just see how the things work out.
Q: What was the difference for you last week at Budds?
A: I think it was a combination of a lot of things. I went to Stewart’s house and was there for two weeks and that was good for me. Just something different, kind of a fresh start.
Q: Do you feel like you’re where you were last year at this time?
A: I think we’re close. But I definitely feel like there are a few things that aren’t 100%. But the team and the bike is great, that’s all at 100%. Anyway, it’s a long season and you never know what can happen.
Q: We’re at the halfway point now, is there enough time left in the series?
A: Yeah, for sure, there’s plenty of time to make something happen, we’re not that far off. We just need to keep plugging away like last week and we’re see where we end up at Elsinore.
Q: We heard that you have a super-quick throttle you’re using to help take some of the pressure off your wrist.
A: Yeah, my wrist doesn’t move so I’ve got a really short throttle that the guys set up for me. It’s still a little bit weird to use, but it’s working and we’re dealing with it.
