The Second moto I decided not to wear my glasses, as I couldn't see anyway, what would it matter. Well I discovered soon enough that I couldn't see the digital 15 second sign! I just waited for the other guys to put it in gear and watched for the gate to drop. It was a strange sight looking down the start straight into what looked just like a lake. The rain never let up. Got a good jump but went sideways in a rut under the water that gave a wheel on the rest of the pack when I was plastered with brown slippery water. By now the track was treacherous. Corners full of water and mud you could not tell how deep the ruts were. Many of the turns you had to rely on a corner worker pointing to the best line. I dropped into a hole that brought the muck up to the bottom of the tank and I just pushed and pinned it as the bike sputtered and crept slowly out of the quick sand. That almost finished my day. I was ready to do another lap when I got the checkered/Red flag. The race had gone the required half way be an official finish and they decided to throw the red flag as there were bikes scattered all over the course and it was getting dangerous. Because if you fell just right you could actually drown! My buddy Glenn McGovern was running down to me as I was coming off the track ecstatic with my 12th place finish. I have to say that I've never been so thrilled with such a low position! After all the preparation to fly home with a couple goose eggs would have been nearly unbearable. As it was I've earned my first FIM GP points in 26 years!
How tough was it. MX1 riders expressed their concerns for safety and FIM officials listened and canceled the MX1 second moto. During press interviews in the media center I took the liberty to poke some fun. It was a correct decision to cancel the MX1 moto as youth and inexperience wouldn't allow them to run both motos like the tough more experienced Veterans did! I'm really looking forward to the newly developed track at Mallory Park in the UK June 1 for another shot at the World's top Veterans. Thanks to Youthstream for providing Bellpuig Veterans race video and permission to show it on the http://www.chucksun.com web site.
